What's the next step for the PM?

What is going to happen in the next revision? When will it be? Could the rack mount server hardware make a migration to the PowerMac, when MWNY rolls around this summer?



I personally am thinking DDR MoBos, along with 1.4ghz G4s. And maybe some other new technology rolled into it, like Gigawire or whatever they're calling it. Maybe some USB 2.0 too.

    Dual 950 to be the highest end while selling at the same price



    Reason: Due to yield of the 1Ghz chip



    Then Mr. Jobs will say "Don't worry. These 'new' G4 will still burn Pentinums'

    New G4 at 1,2 ghz with ddr mobo will be great. For that mot have to produce a new chip the 7460. Considering that the 7455 have been introduced recently , i think that we are going to wait 6 month in order to get it.

    MWNY will be a great surprise to see them. But the politic of Apple have change this last time, dispite the new I mac, all the revisions of Mac are introduced as soon they are avalaible, and not necessary in big shows. I think it come from the lessons of the errors of the past with the introduction for example of the G4 733 mhz, where people wait for three months in order to get it.

    I would really like to see apple do something with the bus speeds ASAP. The 33Mhz bump in bus speeds made a world of diffrence. I wonder how much the current speeds are holding us back.

    What I'd love to see:



    - New case design, without loss of the merits from the current case

    - 1.6+GHz Dual G4s

    - DDR-RAM, 2-4GB ceiling

    - GigaWire/FireWire 2

    - USB 2.0 (I know, I'm dreaming)

    - Audio-in

    - Ports, or a port door, in the front

    - Cheaper SCSI and RAID, dammit

    Sorry Powerdoc but the 7460 (Appolo) is already in production. The chip is used by the actual PowerMac.

    IMO .. i think all apple need to do is:

    266Mhz / 300Mhz bus speed

    2-4GB RAM

    Hypertransport

    Gigawire

    Bluetooth



    the G4 is being strangled at the moment, it's got plenty of legs left still.

    why introduce the G5?

    its pointless putting a Ferrarri engine in the mini.

    I think we will see a transition to the G5.



    My guess is the Mobo will be stepped up first (w/a small Processor bump). Then in Jan we will see the new chip really taking advantage of the new board.

    yeah, gmasta and keda. transition is the key. momboard needs updating, AND g4 has to be able to do DDR. (not sure what are teh issues, seen the argument many times, still not sure what is the gig.)



    anyway, optimism dictates g5/new momboard/fun smaller case, aluminum or brushed steel, even crane-arm iMacish. pragmatic view: what you guys said.

    No, the Apollo is the 7455, which is currently in both the PowerMac and the PowerBook lines (and possibly the iMac as well).



    powerdoc is positing that the next revision of the G4 will be called the 7460. I personally doubt it, since the low-power version is ten lower, and "7450" is already taken. But the point is, he's not referring to the current chip.

    right by 7460 i was meaning the next G4 with a DDR memory controller. I don't have a clue of the new name, it's possible also that they decided to call it the 7500. However it's not important what bother us, is what the chip have in his guts : we want more power !

    Yeah, the G4 has so much life left in it...that must be why it's stalled at 1 GHz while the Pentium is coasting to 3 GHz by the end of this year.



    What do we need the G5 for? Ummmm....to compete with AMD and Intel CPUs that power Wintel boxes! WTF, are you blind and deaf? Have you been living in a cave? Apple is getting their asses whupped on a daily basis in every new benchmark/bake-off test that puts Apple's all-mighty powermacs up against even OLD x86 CPUs!!
