Both ThinkSecret and O'Grady are reporting that new iBooks will be released soon?as soon as next week, and definitely before MWNY.

    That's a bad spec. iBook needs a G4. There's more than enough feature and speed seperation to put 600 and 700Mhz G4's into an iBook right now.



    It wouldn't be the first time that the fastest iBook's CPU has been a little faster than the slowest powerbook's. 466 graphite SE vs 400Mhz Pismo.



    Just look at the feature though



    Current TiBook vs a proposed G4 iBook.



    CPU

    G4 667/800 vs G4 600/700



    CACHE

    1MB L3 vs. no L3 Cache



    BUS

    133 vs 100



    DISPLAY

    1280x854 15.2" vs 1024x768 12 & 14"



    VIDEO

    32MB Radeon 7500 w/spanning support, fully QE optimized vs 16MB Radeon 7500 w/o spanning support, partially QE optimized.



    I/O



    Same, except TiBook has a PC-card.



    HDD



    TiBook's drives are larger and faster and easily swapped. iBook drives are limited to 4200rpm 30GB (20GB standard) and NOT easily swapped.



    To me the screen and display options of a TiBook would still make it the Pro laptop choice vs a 16MB VRAM G4 iBook.



    Personally I think that there will be a short period (maybe about 2-3months) where the top line iBook will appear to have near spec parity with the bottom line TiBooks (a G4 and the exact same 32MB Radeon7500) but lack the Drive, bus, and screen/display capabilities. The current Ti is a very nice bump, but it isn't a redesign, the SOI G4 667/800 and Radeon 7500 are both drop-in pin compatible replacements for the parts they replace. So is the screen. Look at the mods to the machine. When you open it up, there's a wealth of heat piping and heat sink that weren't there before, and a stuck on thermal pad underneath. This is a patchwork mod. A very good one, but one that was designed to take the current layout to the max and keep it respectable next to the competition.



    A few (2 or 3) months after a revamped iBook, a new Ti will surface with a revamped MoBo with laptop equivalents of the server/tower announcements expected over the next few days/weeks. If the server debuts DDR, better I/O and maybe a new chip, I fully expect that those technologies quickly spread to the pro machines. The TiBook won't get the fastest desktop chips, but it should get DDR, comparable I/O, and a smaller process G4 (.13u). MWSF at the latest.

    But the iBook is smaller, eh? (Not to mention lighter) My wife is small in size and she just loves the 12.1" unit because it is the right size for her to tote. It just might be that a smaller lighter unit *might* be easier for say KIDS to tote, which might be kinda important to say....Education? Broken legged mule AI posters.

    excepting for the Video card, wherei see a radeon mobility first generation , i agree with your guess.

    The new i book have to be G4. Kill the G3. Classic is dead according to SJ, and os X works better on G4 : so it's easy to see the future of the i booK

    i'm in the market for a new iBook. I love the sheer physical size of it ... but i want a better CPU and GPU.



    I'd really like to see at least a 200Mhz increase, to 700Mhz & 800Mhz respectively if Apple are going to continue to use the G3 for the next iteration. Obviously a G4 would be great, and following the eMac it might happen. In which case a 600 & 700Mhz version would be fine .... here's hoping!



    I'd love to see a 32Mb GPU as well: possibly a Mobility Radeon 7500, but as the TiBook has only just moved up to that level I don't think it'll happen. Would ATi make a 16Mb version of the above card, or do the onboard effects require a min of 32Mb?

    G4 for sure, man. OS X is the future and so is the G4. If Apple didn't use a G3 in the eMac, then no way will they use one in the iBook.



    Now that Apple's entire line will soon be using the G4, it will be time to haul out the G5! At least, that would be nice, wouldn't it?

    I don't know why everybody points out that we need a G4 Chip in the iBook. The G3 is a great chip, for it has low heat, low power consumption and the same performance as a G4 when processing non altivec tasks. It is still good for all of the things normally used on iBooks. we just need a decent speed increase, up too 900 MHz. That'll be alright.

    That's the problem. Everything is being optimised for Altivec, especially OS X. i wouldn't be surprised is the minimum requirements for the next version of OS X (after Jaguar) will require G4 minimum.

    The G3 is not a great chip. It was a great chip but it simply cannot compete. Altivec ops are about the only thing that even keep the PPC in the general vicinty of current x86 performance. Expect consumer apps, and not only pro apps, to make ever more (and better) use of it.



    Anyone who plans to keep their computer for more than 2 years should not buy a G3, period.



    A SIMD enabled Sahara was rumored. A not-quite-a-G4 but rather a G3+SIMD (just about the same thing) would be OK. The future of Mac is Altivec. They're too far in to go back now.

    I'd rather have a G3 Sahara in the iBook at 800Mhz than a lower-Mhz G4. It would be cheaper, much (much much) smaller, energy efficient, and cooler.



    When a smaller G4 comes out, then great. But I don't run Photoshop filters, and I think the system-wide performance gains from altivec are exaggerated.

    Agreed. I would rather see "Consumer" portables using a cheeper, cleaner, cooler and more efficient CPU. Besides which, given the problems Apple has had trying to get chips from Motorola, it might make sense for them to have two vendor options on at least ONE of their portables.



    Additionally, has anyone tried OS X.2 on a Ti book? That Quartz extreme comes at a cost, mainly heat.

    A SIMD enabled G3 is only useful if the SIMD IS Altivec. IBM is not going to reinvent the wheel, and any SIMD that uses different instructions than Altivec is simply not going to see the light of day. Apple wants developers to write for Altivec, and the last thing that they are going to do is fork SIMD by having two versions. Besides, how much of a life would a G3 have if it supported SIMD? It would be the G3's last gasp. Too much design effort for too little return.



    I don't think that Apple will lower the MHz of the CPU if it goes from a G3 to a G4, but that it will probably update the CPU from a G3 to a G4. So I would expect to see a 500 and 600 MHz G4 in the new iBooks. This makes for decent product differentiation (esp when the G4 goes 0.13 micron and the tiBooks can be upgraded again).

    Thinking about this more, I can see Apple keeping a G3 iBook around for educational purposes (elementary-high school, not college). Why? G3's are cheap. I could see Apple keeping a cheap iBook around for when it wants to compete for large school contracts. I can see the usefulness of an academic model G3 iBook. The price would be under $1,000. Apple seems to be getting back into the habit of making machines specifically for the education market.

    yes, but G4's are cheap too. With an SOI 800 G4 going for 125, G4's from 500-700 can only be cheaper. I don't think IBM could do much better than that.

    I think the 12" ibook will get a 600 MHz G3 and possibly a slight price cut, while the 14" gets a 600 MHz G4. both gets 16MB graphics cards.

    That would be a mistake.



    To force buyers to choose either G4 and bulky, heavy, unnecessarily large form factor...



    OR



    slim, efficient, light form factor but with a G3.





    How about this, if the 14" must be a G4 and the 12" can't be a G4...



    12" 800 MHz G3

    14" 500 MHz G4



    That would be fair.
