The server will have a dual 1GHz G4 processor, 256K L2, 4MB DDR L3 caches. System controller with custom ASIC done by Apple. Built-in: Gigabit Ethernet and FireWire. That controller has up to 2GB DDR SDRAM. (This is the first time that we know of that that SDRAM has been used in a 1U server.) In addition, it will have a PCI slot with gigabit Ethernet. This means server comes std. with two gigabit Ethernet ports. Quad ATA/100 drives, all on independent controllers and all have independent channels into system controller; a CD-ROM and 2 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots.

Security: enclosure security lock, intrusion alert and software lock (FireWire, USB and CD-ROM can be locked down)
We also have hardware monitoring, where we try to alert you to what needs service. We monitor drive status and pre-fail, temperature (processor and enclosure), fans, power supply and network link.
You can service an Xserve in seconds. The units literally just slide out [like a drawer]. There's no top to take off.
SMART drive monitoring, so we can do predictive failure on drives. The servers will have hot-pluggable drives that pull out of the front of the device in a custom-made carriage.
"This is the fastest architecture we've ever built," said Jobs.
We're going with ATA because they're just as fast as SCSI and they offer real benefits in term of largest capacities.
Storage: 60GB and 120GB ATA/100 drives. (We support 4 drive bays, so that means 480GB max in a 1U server.)
" Pronounced ay-sik, and short for Application Specific Integrated Circuit, a chip designed for a particular application. ASICs are built by connecting existing circuit building blocks in new ways. Since the building blocks already exist in a library, it is much easier to produce a new ASIC than to design a new chip from scratch. "
ie - they designed the memory controller and did not use a third parties product
I am sorry but these specs are UNDER whelming and for one reason alone. There are faster G4's available but Jobs is so damn paranoid that there will be a faster G4 in the server than on the desktop he announces this thing. Bleh Bleh Bleh is what I say! And if the GHz G4's work with DDR than why the hell does the Power Mac still have SDRAM?? And don't you dare say "it will be DDR ths summer..." It shold have been DDR LAST Summer.
It will be interesting to see benchmarks for this machine compared to the dual Gig desktop. We'll get to really see how much of an improvement DDR makes in the G4.
My only question - can I get one in Blue Dalmation?

I disagree. I bet the next 2 hours are going apple is going to show software and solutions to the press and when you see it and the prices in comparison to dell, ibm etc. you will see that they hit their target market dead on.
I mean 4mb L3 cache?!!!!
And you call him a pussy since they are 1.0 gig in stead of 1.2? Have you seend the expandablity specs and the hot swapping and monitoring of everything?
? Xserve $3999 - 266MHz DDR SDRAM, 4 bays means more total capacity
Apple is taking orders today and the server will ship in June
Pricing & Availability starts at $2999 for two standard models: 1GHz dual 256MB DDR and a 60GB hard disk for $2999 -- 1GHz dual 512 MB DDR with a 60GB for $3999. But most people aren't going to buy a standard configuration -- they'll configure it themselves on the Apple store.
Considering that XServer is Apple's new venture into the Enterprise market, don't you think they should update this part of their site...hehe.
Woah! Newsflash everyone...

I agree that the price point to features ratio is nice, I do not dispute that. Obviously the board of directors has made some headway with Jobs, convincing him that every single product upgrade does not need a huge conference, but the speeed crap has to stop. Yes these should be 1.2 or 1.4 dual GHz G4's. Will that speed difference make that big of a difference? Not that much. From a PR standpoint will it? Yes. Are the chips available? Yes. Is DDR compatiable with the G4? YES! F***in Jobs!

i thought they wanted us to call it "10," not "X"...
hmmm... refresh maccentral... refresh apple.com... pictures, darn it... specs!

Looks like the leaked specs were almost right on.

Sounds like some damn nice machine to me, for a server that is.
If we get that, paired with a nice GPU and AGP slot at MWNY....bought.

(No doubt they'll have an insanely great website for the Xserver...old site is funny though)
