Actually, I remembered another one. He was a metal guitarist but that shouldn't diminish how talented he was in general. Probably he doesn't belong on the short list but Randy Rhodes was pretty amazing if you like that kind of music.

And when he wasn't busy being a drunken ass, Ritchie Blackmore was outstanding back in the day. I heard he blew during many concerts though because he was so full of himself he'd say to hell with the song, and start improvising while the rest of the band was playing their part....

I practically worshiped at the "Alter of Eddie" when I was about 12-15 years old. He is a pretty damn good metal / hard rock guitarist that's for sure. His best stuff was by far between 1978 and 1981. Fair Warning wasn't that popular an album but was probably my favorite because it showed Eddie had a more rhythmic side too, not just Eruption type stuff.

But...."best" guitarist....thats sort of meaningless...a bit like asking if Monet is "better" then van Gogh...or a rogan josh is "better" than a vindaloo.

Anyway my favs off the top of my head: re. jazz...I love Django Rheinhardt, Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Les Paul, Adrian Legg, Michael Hedges, Al diMeola, ...

Lot of good really choices in this thread so far. Surprised it took so long for someone to mention Al diMeola though.

No Leo Kottke? He's ahead of even Hendrix in many respects.

Not a lot of guitarists from outside of mainstream rock / blues (although that's not a huge surprise coming from Rolling Stone). I'll give them Hendrix, but Diblo Dibala should have been top five at least. Zoot Horn Rollo too (although he was always better when duelling with Rockette Morton).

Still, its nowhere as annoying and wrongheaded as every NME Top 100 ever.

    My personal favorite guitarist are:

    1. Steve Vai

    2. Joe Satriani

    3. Paul Gilbert

    4. Buckethead

    5. Slash

    6. George Harrison

    7. Dave Mustaine

    8. Kirk Hammet

    9. Kurt Cobain

    10. Jimmy Hendrix

    11. Paul McCartney (on the bass)

I can go on forever. The list is no way in order of preference.

maybe they don't consider him rock? joni might be on for her innovative open tunings, but leo's all over that too.

hopefully someone at r/s is slapping themselves on the head for the oversight.

i've seen leo twice, each time i didn't go near my instrument for weeks..........i didn't pick up my guitar either.

Well, it's virtually impossible to compile a top 100 that isn't going to make 3/4 of readers upset one way or another...

    *shrug*

    The Edge?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I still say that there are some, maybe only 5, that deserve to be on the list no matter what. Realistically I think a bunch of the list is crap, but I won't begrude some YES fan even though I don't like YES. There's enough room in 100 for that.

Leo though is is a class all by himself. If you listen to him, it's impossible not to acknowledge his proficiency.

My only thought on that list that murbot posted is that there is no way in hell that Kurt Cobain is the 12th greatest guitarist of all-time. I mean, I like Nirvana and all, but Kurt was a technically mediocre guitar player.

Oh, and my other beef with the list comes from the fact that recently at Lollapalooza, Audioslave covered a White Stripes song (Seven Nation Army) and Tom Morello played the song much better than Jack White does (IMHO).

it's funny you say that, whenever i hear steve howe play acoustic ("the clap" from "the yes album" for example) i think, "my, he sounds like leo"
