Final proof of new hardware at MWNY?

Dunno, I always hear that the naked mole rat is quite credible and under <a href="http://www.macedition.com/nmr/nmr_20020517.php"; target="_blank">http://www.macedition.com/nmr/nmr_20020517.php</a>; one can read;

"While Generalissimo Jobs? pronouncement that the big cat will spring in ?late summer? prompted some wags to speculate an eleventh-hour arrival date of Sept. 20 or thereabouts, the Blade?s Prætorian Guard is predicting a much more aggressive release schedule: The final candidate will rear its head during the last week of June, they aver, and the shipping version should put in an appearance at July?s Macworld Expo/New York ? presumably alongside Apple?s next major round of desktop hardware."

Since "desktop hardware" is mentioned and not PowerMacs specifically, could we even expect updated iMac models in addition to a refreshed PowerMac line? Now that the ServeX runs on dual ghz processors I wouldn't be surprised if the PowerMac models would jump to 1.4ghz? - I mean clearly Apple has lots of 1.0 ghz processors if they equipped the servers with them and either motorola is only spitting out 1.0 ghz chips as of late or we will see the iMac with 933 and the powermac with 1.133 and higher..

The neighbor of a friend of the Uncle of an ex-wife of a co-worker I used to work with told me that there is going to be a 3.2Ghz G6 using 266 SDRAM up to 4GB, 6 PCI slots @ 64Bit/133Bus, 8x AGP shipping with a new ATI AGP 9600 w/ 512MB of on-board SDRAM... and they're offering up to QUAD processor machines. They will start around $799 and are smaller than the cube... use no fans... yet can hold 4 ATA/133 disk drives, the "new" SuperDuperDrive on ALL models, and velocity-sensing keyboard... so the harder you type... the LARGER and BOLDER the font gets. Great with iChat.

    heheh...

    (just havin' fun... sorry)

Excuse me? The article only claimed Jaguar to ship sooner than anticipated (MWNY, which is not totally unrealistic btw) and hinted that it might go hand in hand with desktop offerings. And since the desktops are at 1ghz already, I speculated that they might go 1.2 or maybe 1.4. Why does this make you feel there's a lack of realism on my part?

Besides this is future hardware, and only suckers complain about speculation here.

Unlike a lot of bogus rumors, the "new" SuperDrive is not vaporware...you can in fact buy it for quite some time now...has DVD-R and DVD-RW capability, and is considerably faster than the one we use.

so does the "original" superdrive, the only difference is the read speed. not much difference there

Bluetooth will make for "great spokes" for Apple's digital hub vision, he feels. "Peripherals such as Bluetooth keyboards and mice are now on their way, along with a constellation of other devices," Brooks says. "Before too long, expect to begin seeing Bluetooth featured prominently on a Mac near you."

Naked Mole Rat = Mac the Knife = great stuff

Its been years I had been hoping he would start writing again. Some people hated him, others loved it. I love the way he writes... totally off the wall.

Anyway, he's been right about a lot of stuff in the past... waaaaay past. Still, good to see hes back

    Hope he's right about this:

"The Blade?s blackout subjectively shortened his wait for the 1.4GHz, RapidIO-licious Power Mac G4 he predicted for February. Now that his eyes are again blinking in unison, he can hardly wait to unpack this supercharged new hardware and get down to brass tacks. ?

What? Apple didn?t? Oh! In that case, pay no attention to the Mac behind the curtain."

Actually that was on purpose. He uses Xserve alright.

Now to speculation - how can people still say a 1.4 ghz PowerMac is BS? I mean, surely, people were complaining about sucking servers and Apple put out great rackmounts, people looked forward to the new iMac and it came with a G4, they complained about lack of a "usable, cheap, CRT G4 iMac for education" and there is eMac. I for one see a nice pattern developing here and surely the AI boards aren't the only voice complaining about the lack of "Power" in the "PowerMac". I am looking forward to a good excuse to buy one this year. And the excuse will be: "But, this is a _real_ workstation, not gaming PC crap!"

So I think 1.2 at least and probably 1.4Ghz G4 is what I expect and since everyone thinks G5 is dead I hope for a G5. And 1.2Ghz, even single, should keep me nice and comfy for at least 1.5 years.

Anybody can say anything is BS, especially when there is no proof or evidence. One of the best techniques available for predicting the future is looking at past trends... that doesn't mean it is correct.

One thing that I think people forget is that Apple needs lots and lots of processors before it can release a machine that uses those processors. Somebody said they were down to 250,000 PowerMacs sold (in the last quarter, was it? or year?). Since many of them are dual processor, that is something like 300,000 chips. That's quite a pile of chips! Yields of a new chip typically start out weak and improve over time, so Apple can't start shipping a chip as soon as it arrives from the fab... they need to stockpile and carefully monitor the yields coming from the fab. This is an expensive proposition, and if they are wrong really bad things happen -- like having to eat crow and downgrade from 500 MHz to 450 MHz. You can bet that Jobs isn't willing to do that again.

What this means is that we are likely to hear rumours about prototype machines well in advance of such a machine shipping, meanwhile Apple maintains a stony silence to avoid completely killing all PowerMac sales (and Moto keeps quiet too, in order to keep their big client happy). There were rumours of the G4 floating around a year before it arrived (primarily due to developers learning about AltiVec). We heard about 1 GHz machines 7-8 months in advance of their arrival. We've been hearing about &gt;1.4 GHz machines and G5 or RapidIO machines since August-November of last year... at MWNY that will be 9-11 months of rumours.

Until they arrive you're going to have to decide whether you want to be optimistic or pessimistic. Personally I'm hoping for a DDR FSB and 1.4 GHz. In my more pessimistic moments I expect to see the 1.2 GHz Xserve as a desktop machine. In my wildly optimistic moments I have fantasies of a RapidIO machine with DDR333 and 1.5 GHz clock rate.

The Xserve architecture is an interesting beast, especially when combined with Quartz Extreme. It probably won't do CPU benchmarks all that well (same as current desktops), but the machine will be considerably faster in general use and while doing I/O or graphically intensive operations. Running MacOSX right now the current machines are spending a large amount of their computational power doing Aqua... Quartz Extreme + Xserve DDR suddenly makes all that Aqua work essentially go away, or at least be massively reduced. These machines probably feel at least twice as fast, especially if you are doing video, 3D, or anything heavily I/O dependent. It would be nice to really unleash the PowerPCs from their memory bottleneck, but even without doing that the new architecture & software are probably a potent combination.

Hehe, in my pessimistic moments I see speed increasing as it was untill now - at some 100/133 mhz steps. Which is still nice, since like you said OpenGL Quartz should make life easier (ahem, and when I suggested to do the aqua stuff with OpenGL people laughed at me.). But thinking of a 1.4ghz G4 makes me smile - unless Moto pumped up the pipeline to 20 steps.. However I do not think that Apple will go for 266 mhz DDR for their next PowerMac revision - wouldn't it be much cheaper for them (R&D) to jump the gun a bit? DDR400 or so?

Yeah, Apple has been doing a lot of stuff right lately and it's become a joy to watch it evolve again...

I loved the Macworld parties With the exception of the Apple Developer party, there are like no good ones anymore
