Can Macs use all standard DVD drives?

I bought a cheap 16X DVD drive by EDO. I assume that Macs can just use a standard DVD drive. Is there anything to look out for?

    I have a 350MHZ B&W. I know the beige ones had problems with standard DVD drives.

    Well I installed my DVD drive and it mostly works but Apple DVD Player 3.1.1 quits when I fast forward too much. It says Media Error #36. Any ideas?
