How to insert symbols in Word via Char. Palette?

I need to insert a very strange Icelandic 'd'-like character into a Word doc that I am working on. I've located the character in the palette, and inserting it in Textedit.app works fine. But when I insert it in Word (using the correct font and all), all I get is a little square box where the character should be in the document. Does anyone know how I can make this WORK? (I am assuming, as always, that it is Microsoft's fault, not mine. )

What fonts have you tried in Word? They don't all contain a character for everything...

Character pallette said that the symbol was available in Times, Lucida Grande, and a whole sh*tload of other fonts. The character looked like a lowercase 'd' with a cross through the stem of the 'd'.

I could be mistaken, but I thought that Office doesn't support unicode characters like those that the character palette offer.

Chock up another technology Microsoft is ignoring.
