MOSR Discusses Possible New Apple Digital Device

New information is also becoming available through the grapevine about Apple's next Digital Lifestyle device. There are at least five different such projects underway at Apple right now, up to three of which could ship this summer, so there's plenty of uncertainty to go around....but the grapevine's choice for device-on-deck is a home digital video theatre.

Such a device would likely include a DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive, a large hard disk, a host of AV input and output ports, Firewire ports (most likely 800Mbps Firewire, which would hook in well with the new PowerMacs that are also rumored to include 800Mbps FW), a powerful remote control, and even built-in support for Apple's flat panel displays, particularly the 23-inch Cinema HD widescreen. Interoperability with Apple's sound systems is also frequently mention. All of this, packed inside an impressively small (and, of course, stylish) enclosure. The price tag will be very competitive, but still not cheap -- not less than $699, and probably more like $899-$999 during its first year.

Ok, those are about the silliest specs for a device yet. It sounds like some Bäng & Olufsen Home Theater setup.... or a headless iMac. And I seriously doubt they would try to position a $3500 23" computer monitor as a Central Video device with out some sort of UHF Tuner.

This is nowhere near their product strategy or market. Whatever the device is will compliment their Computers, never replace them....

The DVD Consortium does not allow FireWire on DVD players. At least that's what I read at /. Don't ask me how computers get around it <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I don't understand the purpose of such a device. Maybe I'm not "getting" it, but ti doesn't sound like something I would really want in my living room.

Don't expect anything like that to be that cheap.

    Check out:

They are both largely failures. Set-top boxes other than DVRs just don't sell.

Well, I don't know what Apple has in mind, but I know what I want. I want a central home theater device that can grab content from a central iTunes machine that houses all the tunez for the entire house. I want to watch internet video on my tv from my couch. I want to be able to watch dvd's from my iMac on my bigscreen tv. I want to mirror my entire video to my tv so people can watch what I'm doing, gaming, movies, etc. And I want it wireless.

Will Apple do it? Sure. Will it take 5-10 years? Prolly.

    null,

Such a device was unveiled by Microsoft and one by another company - the name escapes me at the moment, at the recent Las Vegas CES show. The latter was named best-in -show.

Well, Robert Morgan, who used to write the RFI report, and is a personal friend to the One True Knife, outlined a report on Golden Convergence back when QuickTime was still 2.x. RKM and friends pleaded with Apple to follow it ahead of the market curve. Nada. Many of that group are the brains behind MacEdition.

    A 23" screen... A 23" screen in a home theater?!?!? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Sorry I just don't buy it... And nobody else will either. I have an 8' yes a 96" screen with a 1024x768 projector in my home theater and if my ceiling wasn't so low in that room I'd have an even bigger one! Don't get me wrong, I'd like and might even buy the box but trying to get me to believe in the rumor by telling me it even has built-in support for the 23" HD display?

Sorry but the market for the 23" HD-LCD and a device such as this are two TOTALLY different markets. The display is for those who create HD content and this box is for nuts like myself...

    ..EDIT..

Oh and I almost forgot this one...

    "Interoperability with Apple's sound systems is also frequently mention" <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Oh please tell me it's true... I'd love to have Apple's sound system in my home theater.. This pesky Dolby Digital 5.1 sound I have now is so distracting. I mean it make me feel like I'm right in the movie... Once I upgrade to the new and improved Apple sound system I can have right and left sound and throw out all of those other speakers. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Sorry... After rethinking this 'rumor report' I will file it under total BS. The person who tipped off MOSR doesn't know the 1st thing about the subject.

Oh and don't even get me started on the price... As Rodney Dangerfield would say "Where ya gonna build it.. fantasy land?"

    Dave
