Patent - April 2, 2002

Just wanted to pass along a very interesting patent that Jonathan Ive and Apple got as of April 2 of this year with the title:

Rotatable door lock with integrated security feature

The first paragraph on the page is very confusing, but if you go about half-way down the page, where the detailed information is, it has some very interesting possibilities for a future enclosure, somewhat like I mentioned <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001714"; target="_blank">here</a>.

Of particular interest is the line:

"In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a housing having a lockable door panel includes a housing having a first opening and a second opening therein, the second opening being spaced from the first opening, the second opening being defined by a wall having a first end and including a generally circular central portion..."

Anyway, could be totally unrelated, but it is strange, in any event.

I suspect this is related to rackmount server design. The two layers of security is very good for servers, so that you can either allow people not access at all, the ability to use the CD drive, and possibly the external ports, but not the HDs and internals, or have it completely open. The current Xserve case has similar features, though I believe that the optical drive and Firewire ports are locked out through software (someone confirm?) if you so choose. If the "integrated security" means an alarm, then that is also included in the Xserve, where you can set it to notify you if it has been accessed.

It pics do look very similar to the gumdrop iMac's rear door, but why would it have a registration date of April 2?

It was filed for in October of 1999. Never pay attention to the final registration dates.

    reason: further discussion is moot.
