SON - Silicon On Nothing!

Instead of using a normal insulator they use empty space between layers to have really really low parasitic resistance to make faster chips faster. Interesting idea Toshiba. maybe Motorola and IBM are working on similar research. Toshiba may have patents on how to MAKE it but they can't patent the actual idea. How can you patent 'nothing'?

    They can (and will) patent any steps they've discovered to implement the SON process, which will slow any would-be competitors down unless their researches stumble upon a process that Toshiba overlooked.

    It's not silicon on nothing of course. Unless they are vaccum sealed it's silicon on air.
