Alright, I'm bored and the interweb is an even more boring place.

What are the best games out there that will run well on my G4/400 with Radeon?

right now on my list are

1.) Madden 2000

2.) Unreal Tournament

3.) Railroad Tycoon II

4.) Star Wars Racer

5.) Quake 3

Escape Velocity Nova should play great on that Mac. Ambrosia is also working on porting the original Escape Velocity and EV: Override to be freely-downloadable plugins for Nova.

For 3D driving, Spy Hunter plays well on my dual 500 w/ original Radeon. Though, I'm not sure how much it uses the CPU(s) versus the graphics card.

If you like puzzle games, Enigmo is 2D game with a 3D look that plays much like the old "The Incredible Machine" series of games. It has a very low 3D demand and should play well.

The 3rd-person fighter/action game Oni by Bungie (ported to X by The Omni Group) should play well. It's a little old, but it has pretty good replay value IMO.

Another one to try is Max Payne - third person shooting, pretty fun. This is the game that uses "bullet time" to slow down time and make it easier to hit guys. Sometimes it can get boring, but it's usually pretty fun.

Also I'd have to recommend Fallout 2 if you like RPGs. It's different from most RPGs in that it takes place in the future, rather than having dragons and wizards and stuff. You fight with guns and knives, and the combat is turn-based. It's real fun but it takes a long time.

Sin Gold runs really well and is fun

    Unreal 1

UT add the return to nai pali map and have fun in single player

Oni what it lacks in graphics it makes up for in gameplay

Rune very nice graphics some levels are horrible some brilliant

    FAKK2 is OK as well

    Among the newer games

Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Ghost Recon ought to work decently (it does on my G4/400 but what is "decent" framerate is a individual thing)

There is that F1 racing game (I have only tried the demo)

UT2003 only seem to be Qake 3 enhanced and thus inferior to UT

Return to Castle Wolfenstein, in my opinion it has the finest team based multiplayer ever conceived and it runs great under OSX! (Remember I had the exact same setup, g4/400-radeon)

I think amazon.com is selling it for less than $20 now

    I recently picked up:

    Zork Grand Inquisitor

    Fallout (v1)

    Giants: Citizen Kabuto

For 5 bucks each from MacPlay (on sale).

    $25.00 total (incl. S&H)

They've since gone back up to $19.99 each (Value Series)-- still pretty good "bang for the buck".

    Tranquility <-- "Must Have"

    I also like:

    Black & White

    Warcraft (II and III)

    Undying

    The Sims

Tropico <-- can be a system pig.

    realMyst <-- nostalgic!

    Alice

    Classic/OS 9 Games:

    Marathon (All versions)

    Amber: Journeys Beyond

Bad Mojo <-- If you can find it, let me know!

    Obsidian

Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time

    Descent II

Some games that ran well enough on my Ti550 and were worth playing...

    OS X

    ------

    Alice

    FAKK2

    Tony Hawk 2

    Quake1 (fruitz of dojo build)

    Quake2 (fruitz of dojo build)

Quake3 (though not fast enough for competive play imo)

    Diablo 2

Starcraft (blizzard has an OS X update for it)

Oni (ran ok but was slow at times)

NWN test (pretty slow but it runs)

    OS 9

    -------

Fallout 1 (haven't tried to OS X version)

    Baldurs Gate 1

    Majesty

    Pod Racer

    Rune

    Diablo

Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire? (with even a kinda unstable Carbon port!)

Also Deus Ex should run reasonably well on that machine. Mmm, Deus Ex.

Why the crap did you guys have to bump this thread???

First of all, you don't bump threads that are fast approaching a year old.

Second, I thought we had seen the return of Applenut (the one who started this thread)

Got me all excited there...now I won't be able to sleep.

It was bumped because someone asked a VERY similar question recently, and Brad linked to this post for reference since he didn't want to have to repeat everything he said before. I guess people followed the link and decided to follow up on this. Maybe this would make a good sticky (after changing the title to something like "Best non-demanding Mac games").

Relax. Some of just don't read the dates. I mean, why would you?

But yes, the thread was linked to in another thread for efficiency's sake.
