Something BIG is coming at MWNY

Something is up at Cupertino.

There has been announcement after announcement outside of a MW recently. We all know how Apple hates to have the spotlight of one product deduct another. It's obvious that Jobs is clearing the MWNY slate clean for a big announcement.

G5, digital hub device?

What do you thing is going on? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    There are multiple threads that notice this. I agree, something big is coming. It had better be.

    PowerMac G5 with FireWire 2, Aiport 2, USB 2, Dolby Surround sound, ATA 133, more drive bays, better case, AGP 8x, MacOS X 10.2, okay I'm done dreaming.

    Steve is coming out??as the new owner of the Sirloin Stockade chain.

    "There was always something missing," He remarked "all my life I tried to find the missing element, I was successful, I used LSD, I went on pilgrimages, and none of it filled that empty spot inside. Well now I know what it was I was missing??Beef."

    I'll tell you what would fill his slot (Ouch! :eek: ) :

    A decendent of the ancient Newton!

    Seriously, Apple does not want a repeat of last MWNY: "Let's thank the families!" I am so sure that they have something. I maybe wrong regarding it's nature, but there is something.

    The truth is out there, man. And it will be revealed to us all at MWNY!

    Yes, I've been noticing this a lot as well. Apple loves to announce things at MW expos so the product gets every chance at the spotlight, and a chance for Jobs or Schiller to spread some Old Fassioned RDF. They haven't been doing that as of late, not since MWNY of last year. MWSF this year was the iMac makeover. Now that all the product lines have been recently updated/introduced, the only two things left for MWNY 2002 are an iMac update and a PowerMac update. And that certianly wont make much of a show for Apple. They aren't going to redo the iMac again, this time around will be a bump. So that pretty much gurrantees us a big announcement at MWNY regarding the PowerMacs or One Last Thing.

    One Last Thing: the bane of Mac user existance. With the lack of possible announcements now, given all the non-expo releases, Jobs may actually make whatever is coming a main feature.

    I'm excited; I'll admitt that.

    The sudden influx of rumors covering so many different topics (at AI, and NMR at MacEdition, and The Register, and Powerpage, and YourDailyMac and a few others) leads me to believe someone is turning up the noise to confuse us about what is really going to happen.

    Then the iSmokeScreen rumors must be true!

    Actually, you raise a good point: is this another Columbus? Remember the combonation DVD player/television that Apple was making? What did we really get? The iMac. (Which was a good thing, I guess. . .)

    Who knows? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Remember last year's MWNY?

    Everyone was expecting something really BIG (like new iMac and GHz+ PM) at that time and what did we see?

    Underwhelming PowerMacs and the same old **** iMac

    This time I am not holding my breath. Maybe we will see Steve fu*cking lies to us that the new 1.13GHz G4 beats the 2.4GHz P4....in gaussian blur filter

    Anyway. Even G5 comes out I still won't be buying anything cause my money are now moving to house.

    If Jobs struts on stage and announces nothing more that dual 1.3's, I will personaly teach him what real pain is. Just kidding!

    Like I said at the top: they have to release something big now. Macs are too far behind and Jobs knows it all too well. If we don't get great new towers, we will probably get a look at the future loot.

    This expo is just dripping with the obvious. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    I still think something was scrapped from MWNY last year. Either the new iMac or the iPod. It wasn't the normal keynote. It just felt different and empty and it seemed as if Jobs knew it and was dissapointed.

    After last year's disaster I think Apple is going to have one kick ass expo in NY.

    It is make it or break it for Apple.

    The time has come where they have the ultimate chance...they must take it, let us hope they take it.!

    It was the iPod. They fell off their shipping schedule and had to wait - with nothing to fill the slot.

    Steve mentioned a year ago or so that they were going to stop using MW as the usual product rollout event. I think that's why we've been seeing so many products revved and released outside of MWs.

    The exception seems to be the big consumer items: iPod, iMac, etc. These may stay in the expos to make them consumer events. The pro hardware may release at events like Seybold, but more likely in a special event.

    The problem is that neither MW is timed for product rollouts. January is no time to release product, right after XMas - it should happen in Oct or Nov. Edu needs to be April/May, which is exactly what we saw this year.

    I don't think any of this suggests that MW will be especially big (it may be, but this isn't evidence that it will be.) I also don't think that we'll see desktops revved at MWNY unless it's to bring something big like a G5 to the game. If it's dual 1.4GHz G4s, they might as well do it in Sept.

    I do think that until consumer and business spending start to increase, Apple will sandbag it's tech. If G5 was available now, they'd be stupid to ship it - nobody is buying. Better to keep improving it so that when they *really* need to ship, they can and really get people's attention. So long as they turn profits, they're going great in this economy and they don't need big tech to do that. Apple is taking the long view. Y'all might hate that, but it's the prudent move.

    If I had to guess for Tues, it'd be the licensing rumor. Apple is doing a great job for .edu right now and that'd play in nicely.

    Let's look at recent updates for an idea:

    Laptops: Recent updates, no revisions at MWNY for sure.

    iMac: due for revision.

    Powermacs: Current models will be about 5 months old at MWNY...possible revision.

    iPod: small revision possible

    New digital hub device: A Definite possiblity.

    LCD displays: new ones likely.

    OS X: Jaguar demo or release.

    Possible "audio suite" iApplication?

    Is there enough for an expo without Powermacs? Absolutely. Imagine how cool an expo would be with:

    iMac:

    ?Mobo revision to 133 MHz system bus, new video chipset, and faster G4s .

    ?17" LCD model.

    Digital devices:

    ?20 GB iPod, and Firewire iPod mic.

    ?New digital device, Firewire based.

    Displays:

    ?18"-19" Widescreen HD LCD.

    ?Possible change in 17" LCD to widescreen aspect ratio.

    ?Possible change in 15" LCD to widescreen aspect ratio (very unlikely).

    Software:

    ?Jaguar either demoed or announced for release.

    ?Possible new iAudio app for audio editing and recording (synchs with iTunes, iMovie, FCP.

    Such a MWNY would be up to par with the average Apple expo. An entirely new digital device, an major iMac revision (guts and display), and new LCD displays...it's a full platter. Such an expo would have room for Powermacs ONLY if they get an ultraLAME revision:

    ?New mobo w/ DDR hack, same old system bus at 133 MHz, same firewire, same old sh!t all around.

    either:

    ?Speedbumped G4s, on 180 nm process clocked to 1.2 GHz (1 GHz, 1.13 GHz, dual 1.2 Ghz).

    -or-

    ?Speedbumped G4s, on 130 nm process clocked to 1.40 GHz (1.0 GHz, 1.2 GHz, 1.4 GHz, duals on either 1.2 or 1.4 GHz ).

    I consider this the most likely expo, with a low probability of 17" LCD iMacs, and 130 nm G4s. Still, this would be a comprehensive expo and would get decent press except for the Powermacs....which are out of Apple's control for the most part. With low end Powermacs at 1 GHz, there would be room for a 1 GHz high end iMac, something I'm sure Jobs would love to offer.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In the unlikely even that Powermacs get a MAJOR revision, then Apple would have to clean the slate for MWNY:
    Sometime in June, August, or September:
    iMac:
    ?Mobo revision to 133 MHz system bus, new video chipset, and faster G4s.
    ?17" LCD model.
    Digital devices:
    ?20 GB iPod, and Firewire iPod mic.
    ?New digital device, Firewire based.
    Neither of these revisions or introductions need an expo for full coverage. Apple has rolled out all recent revisions outside of expos, however a 17" iMac might be considered a new product worthy of the MWNY spotlight. Displays can be announced at expos without stealing the spotlight from other announcements.
    So with the above announcements out of the way, this leaves the following for MWNY:
    Powermacs!
    ?New case with THREE full sized external access drive bays (one for optical drive, one empty or w/ zip drive, and one empty).
    ?New mobo, Firewire 2, RapidIO bus @ 400-500 MHz, PC2100 or PC2700 DDR RAM
    ?G5! 1.4-1.5 GHz high end, 1.0 GHz low end.
    Displays:
    ?If new G5s, then all LCD displays, old and new, get new styling to match the new Powermacs.
    ?18"-19" Widescreen HD LCD.
    ?Possible change in 17" LCD to widescreen aspect ratio.
    ?Possible change in 15" LCD to widescreen aspect ratio (very unlikely)
    Such a MWNY would be perfect for the introduction of new Powermacs. It would focus attention on nothing but the Powermacs and LCD displays to match them, and Jaguar. It would be an expo aimed at professionals, in contrast to Apple's most recent expo (MWSF) which was aimed at consumer products (iMac). Also, if Powermacs go G5 at MWNY, then look for an iMac revision after MWNY, with 1 GHz iMacs a certainty, MAYBE even 1.1 or 1.2 GHz imacs.
    I don't have any inside info, basically I farted out different possibilities for MWNY, that's all.
    But no matter what, it will be something big. EVERY Macworld Exp revolves around something "big", they are all big events...so saying that "something big" is coming is not really saying anything at all.
    RE: Something BIG at MWNY
    I hate to be a nay-sayer... but don't get your hopes too high... Remember the new iMac...?
    All the rumor sites went into the STRATOSPHERE because Apple said: "Beyond the rumor sites... WAY beyond...". All of a sudden, people were expecting satelite-based wireless ISPs and LUDICROUS speed jumps and performance gains... only to find...
    It's just another iMac. Don't get me wrong... I love the new iMac... It's a great little box... but it was FAR from being "beyond" the rumor sites. Gee... a flat-panel iMac...? Who knew...? Please... it was the next obvious step in the evolution of that product line... no big secret or surprise there.
    Now people are getting all "excited" about MWNY thinking that there's gonna be this huge "religious-like" revelation of product(s) based on hearsay and rumors (be them legit, or not).
    Sure... they'll speed-bump the towers, MAYBE a new enclosure... iMac may get rev'ed... possibly even the portables... a Jaguar preview... iChat, new Address & Mail, possibly a Quartz Extreme demo of some sort... he'll talk about the new Xserve and the RAID boxes... maybe even roll-out a new app... who knows...?
    I may eat-crow later... but I just don't think MWNY is going to be THAT big of a product roll-out venue for Apple. Call me crazy.
    Every Expo iMacFanatics say: Lookout! Something BIG is coming!
    Most of the time, this is true, but not to the level of expectations we hype ourselves into.
    Case in point:
    MWSF2002 - G4 iMac: Way Beyond the Rumors?
    Well, maybe in the eyes of Apple. In our eyes?
    But then again, it's spring, when a young Mac's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of G5s and <a href="http://www.crazyapplerumors.com/"; target="_blank">sexbots...</a>
    Wasn't that a <a href="http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1317056392/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/ArtistID=YOUNG*JOHN+PAUL/ITEMID=1161235"; target="_blank">1970s song</a>?
    Well, the Powermac line-up certainly needs to be revitalized. We know and so does Apple. I'm pretty confident that we'll see more than a mere speed bump. It's time for a shift like the one we had when the BW G3 replaced the beige G3's. And OS 10.2 will be icing on the cake for Apple to show off the potential of their latest Pentium crushing box. Uhh, got myself all excited there...
    Not bad guesses. I can see this happening.
    Nothing too mindblowing for us...but probably will be overhyped by Apple.
    I can't see Apple unveiling any technological marvels (or HyperTransport for that matter).
    These days, Apple seem more about solutions and integration. They use existing technololgy and not even the latest stuff, but make sure they works to it's fullest.
