To answer your question, iDVD 3 is not freely downloadable, as Apple claims the download would be much too large. It comes on Macs with a DVD burner, or in the iLife retail box.
Weren't the previous versions before iDVD3 free and downloadable?
I can't seem to find it, does anyone know of a downloadable version?
Not sure about the original iDVD but iDVD2&3 were definitely paid upgrades unless you got them with a superdrive Mac. iDVD is a big install. My iDVD app weighs in at 1.7GB. That includes a tutorial and all the backgrounds from iDVD2 (which the upgrade keeps).
As for the payment issue..I haven't got a problem with it..it's a fantastic program and well worth the money.

I would really like to use iDVD3, but I'm not prepared to pay the extra $$$ for Apple's overpriced SuperDrive solution.
Sigh...
Still, I love my CD eMac.
