Video card upgrades for older Mac OS X "supported" portables

I would really like to be able to take full advantage of Quartz Extreme on my 400Mhz TiBook, but it came with a lame Rage 128 Pro graphics card with only 8MB of VRAM and it is recommended that you have at least 32MB for Quartz Extreme.

Does anyone know if Apple is planning to have a graphics card upgrade program for older PowerBooks and iBooks?

I think that many people would be interested in something like that, even if it requires you to send your laptop to Apple.

If they don't at least offer us the option to upgrade, all of that "supported" hardware will be left in the dust.

I know that Jaguar will still have graphics acceleration on a Rage 128 Pro, but overall performance won't really be on par with the rest of Apple's product lineup.

I've got a 600 iBook with a Rage... so I'm in the same boat.

Unfortunately, I think that the video subsystem is built into the mainboard of the apple portables.

    As far as I know anyways <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />

that's correct. the portables and iMacs and eMacs use integrated video chipsets on the motherboard. they are not upgradeable.

But, the tIbook, I believe uses a standardized format, at least for the Radeon and up. But size issues could easily make that impossible as well, so really I have no clue.
