My computer is beyond repair and needs to be erased and reinstalled. I however have data I need from the hard drive. I hopefully will be able to get the info off the errant drive with target disk mode. I have an ethernet cable that came with my ipod. Is this an acceptable ethernet cable or do I need something else? Thanks

I assume you mean firewire cable, as thats what came with the iPod...

all you need is another FW mac and a cable... boot the borked mac while holding T... it should boot with a FW symbol... then hood the 2 computers up with the cable and it should register as a FW HD...

Sorry to nit pick but the apple hardware page say the firewire cable that comes with the ipod is a 4-6 pin cable. the support page says that target disk mode requires a 6-6 pin cable. Am I reading too much into this? should the ipod firewire cable still work?

all iPods come with 6pin-6pin cables (you can tell because they look the same)

the new iPods (and old PC iPods) also come with a 4pin-6pin adapter that you attach to the 6-6 cable... it should work fine

That make sense. I was wondering what the heck that adapter was for.

in your case (assuming you don't have a PC) it would work great to attach a DV camera to your mac
