For what it's worth, I believe we'll see at least a 17 inch LCD iMac and a spec bump at New York. 1 gig G4 and a boost to graphics card on the top end. It's obvious that this is needed to bolster the LCD iMac since the launch of the eMac. Even more so now the eMac is available to general consumers.
By the time New York MacWorld rolls by it will have been over six months since the announcement.
I don't think it'll be the main announcement. But with Macworld Newyork being a 'consumer'(?) based show then I don't see why not...

I have an idea for apple and it's imac,...why not sel screens and bases separatly. the base would have a monitor connector where the screen's articulated "arm" goes....
I mean, that what really bothers me in the current imac is the fact that i buy an lcd just to know i will have to trow it away for my next computer....
Apple would sell upgraded bases and upgraded screens...hell, they could even make universal screens for their power mac and imac line. For the imac you just would have to adapt the "arm" on it.
Anyway, it's just my two cents...but it would be easier to me and for others to buy a new base rather then a new imac...and well, i think apple would sell more machines and make more money of it
it's debateable if iMac sales are really falling. One analyst says they are on target for this quarter another says there's alot in inventory so they aren't selling. Say what? Damned if you do damned if you don't. Apple is getting enough product ready for the back-to-school selling season in a few months. Inventory levels are now high enough to ensure there will be no shortages. This is the slowest period historically for computer sales - the calm before the storm, so to speak. Knee jerk reaction all around I'm afraid with nothing to prove it. Apple said they are meeting estimates for this quarter and will make their predictions. And the beat goes on.
Additionally, the iMac (like the PowerMac) has been on a predicatable 6 month schedule in terms of updates. Let's see, it's now June. The iMacs are due for an update in July. Do you really have to be a rocket scientist to realize that many are now waiting for the upgrade before they buy? It's amazing how much credit these "Analysts" are given, considering how often they ignore the obvious and come to false conclusions.

While I really like your idea, it does have some pretty big technical/design hurdles to overcome. The biggest of which is that you need a big(wide) and heavy base to support an LCD (15" or larger) on an articulated arm like that. With the iMac, that problem is solved. For external LCDs for the Powermac line, you'd need to sell another base for it to screw into, and then you'll lose a huge amount of desk space. Now, I suppose they could sell an alternative bracket for the back of the screen itself that would act similar to the way the current Studio/Cinema Displays work. Heck they could also sell the articulating arm with a screw-in mounting bracket for desk or wall mounting.
Man, I'd love an LCD on a swing arm mounted to the wall. That would look SO cool!

Apple does sell this already, it is called the Powermac. It is available with an optional 15",17", 22", or 23" LCD flat panel display.
Just because Apple seems to have missed the point of the imac in terms of it's price, does not mean that we should miss it in terms of it's function!!!
I'm interested in knowing if the new top of the line Powemac that will be announced in July will come in at a lower price than the Dual 1Gig.was priced at.
The dual 1gig was priced I believe $500 lower than the dual 800Mhz. when it was announced, hopefully this will be a trend that Apple will continue.

I don't think we'll see iMacs at both 933 and 1000 MHz. That gap is too close. I don't think we'll see iMacs higher than $1899. At the very worst, there would be a 17" iMac for $1999.
Re: MY insitence that claimed LCD price hikes/shortages were at worst highly specious, and at best, extremely temporary:
Thank you and good night to all the nay sayers!
I said it far and wide, that LCD costs were quite low and hadn't risen dramatically enough to eat margins on a 1200-1700 machine. True to form they didn't. Indeed, the situation is so bad that LCD prices KEEP GOING DOWN! Whenever I quote the numerous local sources for 15" and 17" LCD price drops (at retail) nobody believe me. Now you can all take some butter and salt with that crow, the LCD situation is so dire, that 19" panels are set to debut at $1000USD.
I knew the price increase was bullshiat from the beginning, and now, Stevie-Boy -- you turtle-neck-wearing-envirogeek-high-fiber-homo -- so does everybody else. Where are the iMac price drops to go with the new improved LCD prices?
Apple raised the iMac's price because they wanted demand to match supply. I never believed for one second that they had to adjust prices because of LCD and RAM prices. Even if LCD and RAM prices went up, it wouldn't be enough to cut into Apple's profit margins.
Apple saw a chance to make more money so they took it. As demand for the iMac falls, Apple will lower the price.
Clearly, Apple isn't interested in expanding their market share, because otherwise they would have boosted supply instead.
So, does someone actually no the profit margin on the iMac as to the necessity of raising the iMac price by $100 to mee the rise in LCD prices. Does anyone know what the assumed LCD price was in Apples budget for profit on the iMac.

So why did Sony, Dell and others also raise their prices within days of Apple's announcement?
