Transferring data from old Mac to new Mac via firewire

I have a blue/white G3 tower and am receiving a 17" powerbook this week. The CD burner and the zip drive on the G3 are not working, so I am wondering how I would be able to pull the stuff I need from the G3 into the G4 Powerbook. Is it as simple as just going firwire to firewire, or is something else a better way to go?

To boot the PowerBook in disk mode, hold down T when it boots up. You should get the Firewire logo on the screen: it can now be used as an external Firewire drive. I don't know if B&W G3s can boot into Firewire disk mode.

You could copy the files across a small network but disk mode is probably easier, faster and takes less setup.

Stoo: Thanks for the quick reply. I just tried on my G3 and boot up was normal. But, if I understand correctly, if I boot up the Powerbook in Disk mode, the G3 should recognize it as an drive via a Firewire cable. Is this correct?

Yes, just start up the PowerBook while holding down the T key (and make sure it's connected to the G3 of course) and it effectively becomes a very expensive external firewire hard drive. You'll know you're doing it right when the screen displays a big FireWire logo instead of starting up like usual.

The PowerBook should be shut down first. Then connect the FW cable between the computers. Then start the PB while holding down the T key.

If you are transferring stuff FROM your G3 TO your POWERBOOK, you shutdown the G3, and then restart and hold 't' on the G3.
