My rule of thumb is that the Proc upgrade has to be less than a 3rd of the cost of the entry level Mac. That means come July we'll probably see a $1500 entry level G4 at 1Ghz. $500 is the most i'd pay.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Looks like the 750Mhz (odd speed, I'll bet it's an overclocked 667) is &lt; $500 which for the huge number of PM G4 400 owners isn't too bad.

Also if Moto has made these available we can expect dual 750Mhz cards from Sonnet pretty soon.

I'll be happy putting a nice 750 in my SOs G4, plus a Geforce2 and it'll be pretty damn good until 'G6' in 2004/2005.

I dunno...don't you guys think the law of diminishing returns applies to any machine with 100MHz FSB / PC100 RAM? That is, that once you get past say 700-800MHz, you would cease to see performance gains with faster processor upgrades?

There's a pic of the new card on <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/"; target="_blank">xlr8yourmac</a> for anyone interested. And yes, it DOES have a fan.

Now, I don't intend to incite a riot with my "ultimatum" as someone noted. I was just thinking out loud. Kind of like

::begin thought bubble:: How much for an upgrade from the BJ to a hat trick? :: end thought bubble ::

    I didn't say, "Give me a G5 (or a G4.5) or else!" I just said I would start pricing them. I have a question:

If you had to price on the Mac advantage, what would it be? Mine is $750. (I think this is generous). All things considered (from a consumer standpoint), after I consider the speed and features (entirely subjective I know) of a Mac vs. a PC ... if the Mac is over $750 more expensive than a PC, I would have to consider the PC.

this is to far. I almost fell over laughing when I read blue2kdave's response, but once you bring in your homophobia, it's over.

Ok first to the topic, the original post nailed my thoughts on the card when i saw it. Wow geat i can upgrade, then wait it means a much better new machine for about double. Has to be a MWNY release of better than a 1.2 but what?

Now to the other, just because conservatives are smart enough not to get Caught doing ... That in public places... white ho... doesn't mean that we do not like ... that or can't talk about ....

Uhhhh....I'm not a homophone. Try reading that post again. I was calling a certain subset of conservatives homophobic. I said that a$$hole conservatives would enjoy watching "gay people" getting beat.

How did you read that to make ME out as a homophobe? It's about as anti-homophobic as you can get!

*warning: large-scale tangent that has nothing to do with CPU upgrades*

Anti-homophobic? So you're against people who are afraid of homosexuals? Are you also against people who are afraid of spiders or closed-in places?

It cracks me up the way people throw stupid words around. Homophobic is a misnomer. Has anyone here actually met somone who appeared to be afraid of homosexuals? The people who bash homosexuals (or any other "minority" group) are not afraid of the people they bash - they're just socially ignorant.

Amazing what the media does to us and we don't even realize it. I for one don't understand the homosexual lifestyle, but I don't by default hate everyone who is gay, much less fear them. Radical as it may seem, I can disagree with someone's lifestyle and still treat them like a normal human being. Whatever that means. None of us is "normal".

Anyway, I don't think these upgrades signal *anything* other than the fact that Motorola has no fabrication issues with the 7455, and that Apple most likely will move a couple hundred MHz beyond whatever upgrades are being offered at MWNY. Anything more speculative than that is just guesswork (and thus pointless).

oops, wrong forum. But while I'm at it... Yeah living in Vermont I hear too much about this whole thing anyway. What's the big deal? Just ignore it if you don't like it. Conservatives can be (always are?) such idiots. They like people minding their own business without "big governement." Heh yeah right. Just like conserving the green. Oh wait, not the environment, their wallet!

Stop making a big deal over nothing. It's someone else's life, get one of your own if you bash other people. JYD I don't think you're a homophobe, I'm just ranting against those who are (no one here I think?)

    Now about those upgrades... Duals?

    More info here...

Not only is "Faster G4's soon" confirmed, but some other notions dispelled.

For example, PowerLogix and other CPU upgrade makers aren't held up by Apple, or anyone else. They're free to do as they please.

Also, they're going to try to make the Cube's 7455 upgrade fanless (well, the lower speed one, anyway).

Wow that MacNN thread is interesting. So, was that "bug" in the bridge chip that wouldn't let B&W G3's the same "bug" that Apple intentionally put in my Blue and White G3 so I couldn't upgrade to G4? If so there are utilities for that. oh, and maybe, is it that bug in the IDE chip? My rev1 G3 has that apparently (good thing I read about that, but I still want a second hard drive! I'm going FireWire I guess.)

So I guess Blue and Whites are stuck

I'm really considering buying a Cube now.

Why don't you ditch that 4 GB piece of sh*t and replace it with a Maxtor. I've put in a nice 7200rpm 40GB drive over a year ago. It's not that backing up 4GB to CD's takes awfully long

Although you might want to consider a new Mac, I know I'm waiting for a good upgrade (=fast bus+ram).

You can get a 80GB Seagate Barracuda IDE drive.

This sh!t is cheap, fast, and quiet

Yes everyone who disagrees with you enjoys seeing someone beat up <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> I'm a social conservative and you know what I think assaulting someone (for whatever reason) is a crime and that people who do so....should be prosecuted! What a concept!

Memory bandwith starvation thruth or myth?

The mantra sem to be that the current G4s are starved. With a G4/400 performing quite similar in a 7 years old 7500 compared to a "native" G4/400 AGP tower, starvation does not seem to be a problem at least not for the singel CPU configurations.

Assuming that we soon will have DDR towers perhaps in 1.0 1.2 and 2x1.4 GHz we will be able to see if the midrange single CPU scales to the current 933 midrange version. My guess is that there will be a minor 10-20% performance gain but I would love to be wrong on that one

This doesn't indicate anything. PowerLogix finaly got around to putting new CPUs on a board compatible with the new PM G4 mobo.

Nothing was stopping them before except common sense. Who would want to spend $800 to buy a 733 G4 when they own a 500 G4?
