New 17" display?

I was just wondering what the validity of a wide screen 17" is? I'm currently working on a 17" iMac and find the resolution just right for what I need to do. A place for pallettes and the page.

The only thing I'm not crazy about on the iMac is that the monitor seems washed out.....and maybe a pro LCD in this configuration might work.

your thoughts?

Good question. I think Apple needs to have a better low-priced panel, with good contrast and colors Ã* la the 20- and 23-inch models. Other computer companies are doing it *cough* Dell *cough*. The only exception with the others -- where I think Apple has the edge -- is that widescreen aspect.

Actually the screen on the iMac IS a pro monitor. It uses the same digital connection (ADC) as any of the Cinema displays it's just permanently connected.

I don't think comparing a Dell monitor to an Apple monitor is fair. The Dell is cheaper because it is of poorer quality. I don't mind paying a premium. If I wanted low-priced (and low-quality) hardware, I'd buy a PC.

I'm not sure about this. I've seen both monitors and I see a notable difference between the two.

What makes the Dell LCDs poorer quality?

Isn't the iMac screen the exact same as the 17" AlBook screen?

Yes. That's what the 17" powerbook video said.

I think they'd be wise to bag the 4:3 17" ASD in favor of a new, 17" wide screen unit, complete with higher quality specs / performance. Or since they're into odd sizes how about an 18" wide screen? 18, 20, 23 works for me. Whatever they do though, they need to make the edges of chassis thinner so dual-monitor setups don't have this big slab of plastic between the two displays.

I had the original New iMac 800 with Superdrive and the display was magnificent. It was much nicer than any LCD I'd seen up to that point. The reason being it was an all digital connection, like the Cinema Displays.

I can't imagine that they would downgrade the quality of the 17" iMac display though.

Incidentally, I gave up the iMac for an iBook 800 14" and I'm truly amazed with it. I do miss the qualtiy of the iMac display though. The original G4 iMac had some problems I believe because It was just plain slow and it would not play QuickTime movies very smoothly.

I am interested in the current versions with the larger display, faster system bus, and 1 gHz proc though.

That's the main reason I'm staying away from the iMac. I need to upgrade my G4 350 and money is an issue. But man, the iMac display sucks compared to the stand alone displays and the eMac has a CRT. Bah. Where's my mini tower apple?!!!!!

I am not into print design, or photographic stuff. Just plain old web stuff for me so I am not "with it" as far as colour on LCD's go. However, I did find the "out of the box" setting on the 17" iMac a bit washed, so I played with the colour calibration program and I am very happy.

I still have a few problems with the very subtle colours, but other than that I am made up with the screen.

The TFT may be the same on the PowerBook and iMac, but the backlight certainly isn't. Nonetheless, it's better than your average laptop LCD in either configuration.

Make sure you calibrate your imac lcd screen, dont use the defaults, at the defaults they look washed out, but if you calibrate it, it can look really good.

You're right General...I did that a couple of days ago (thought I'd check out the color settings). Looks better.

But I still hope Apple considers changing the 17" to a landscape model.
