Illegal street racing
A new ordinance in ontario (a city in SoCal) gives police the right to not only ticket and arrest illegal street racing scumbags but to take away the car being used as well...permanently. It does not matter if the car belongs to the parents or the kid, it gets taken and auctioned off to help fund the police department.
I love it. Those illegal street racing bastards who callously endanger the lives of others to get a cheap thrill deserve it.

I don't agree about confiscating property without a guilty verdict. I could understand arresting them, towing the vehicle to the impound yard and making them pay for the tow and impound fees. However outright confiscating of property for an alleged crime is wrong in my book.
I guess they will all just have to go to the drag strip opening in Banning now.

Used with the proper disecrtion, it's a good thing. The threat alone should help deter some of these rice bastards.
when a street racer kills an innocent bystander (many lately in BC), it's tragic
when a street racer kills themselves, it's Darwin.
drunk drivers should get the same deal.
confiscate the car... if injury or death, permanently.
driving is a privilege to be earned, not a right you deserve.
i'd be all for increasing the minimum age for fully legal driving to 20 or 21.
Learner's permit (they have the L and N window stickers here now) might start at 18, or from 16 to 18.
Graduated limits on speed, road access, weather conditions, etc until experience and testing.
BC now limits "New" drivers to the number of passengers they may carry outside certain hours
permanent loss of driving privilege still doesn't deter some who drive while suspended.
seizing their cars, and any car they're caught driving, might get noticed
seniors should face more rigourous driving tests to maintain licence as alertness drops, too
most of the elderly "racing" is mistaken pedal or stroke or alzheimer-like
but operation of a Ton of powered steel isn't for the unprepared or unaware
So the police will get money from the car eh. From the looks of things around here they would get more money for the custom parts in the car the the ride itself. Haha
So for a cop it's ...
See a nice car on the road with a kid driving daddy's car, wanna a new set of computers for the cops cars, pull kid over, auction off car or dad pays scumbag lawyer $50k to get a $65k car back.

Scott pretty much nailed it. My dad worked as a prosecutor for years, and cops tried to pull this crap all the time. They used to confiscate cars all the time to keep for themselves. They'd sell it to themselves at police auctions for next to nothing. The worst part is since the majority of the force was in on it, he couldn't do much. There were some cases he ended up just throwing out because these guys were being so dishonest about pulling people over and what they were supposed to have "found".

There's too many case where the cops have seized property under the guise of it coming from drug money profit where in fact it had not. Migrant workers have been taken off by the cops when they try to travel back to Mexico with their earning in cash. There are too many cases where this tactic has been abused.

Scott,
Are we allowed to agree?

Move it to the post conviction stage, with the attendant burdens of proof that a criminal trial brings, and I'm all for taking away these bastards' property. However, I have the same objections as the others about trusting "discretion" especially to the siezure of property.
I agree. However, it is a step in the right direction.
But even worse..kids as young as 10 are roaming the streets at night stealing cars and deliberately getting cops to try and chase them.
Very often, they also deliberately ram the cop cars at high speed...So our cops have decided to call off such chases once they become aware of the age of the driver & occupants.
Unfortunately this chicken game is then turned onto other innocent drivers...but more often than not these stoopid children end up dead coz of rolling the stolen cars they're in etc..
And guess what ? car theft is a misdemeanor. And in our state children under 15 can't be charged or found legally responsible... so the cops are powerless...
And you guys think you've got problems with boy racers....Sheee----iittt....
there is only ONE way to stop illegal street racing: make it mandatory that they race for pink-slips. you'd cut down the number of cars that are raceable by more than 50% in one evening.

What's so scummy about these people? I race illegally, and I'm not exactly a scumbag. Every race I've ever seen or been to has been at either:
1) large empty parking lot
2) closed train station
3) closed/abandoned area
So there's very little going on to endanger anyone aside from the people who decide for themselves to take the risk. The laws being made are purely part of a power trip that cops and lawmakers feel they have a right to.
It's clear to me that no one else in this thread has any idea about street racing. And as far as drag racing is concerned, which is the most common kind of street racing, it is so safe. The cars are going in straight lines. When racing around curves in parking lots, I've never seen it done with more than one car at once, where the time is what wins.
Maybe I just tend to frequent races held by responsible people, but between you and me, there's a big difference between hollywood and reality.

Gee, a street racer defending street racing. Who'd a thunk it?

What's a street racer supposed to do? Some of his points are correct, even if you choose to ignore them.

I did not choose to ignore them. Still, all street racing should be sanctioned. Find a damn track. Get an OK from the owner of the abandoned lot.
Sorry, but he just sounds like those drunk drivers that think if they are really careful nothing is going to happen. Sorry, but shit happens.
What really made me ignore him was this quote:

Right. It has nothing to do about the racing that goes on in the middle of the city streets at night in Ontario. It's just a power trip. It can't be an honest attempt at trying to make the public a little more safe from these reckless menaces.
Anyway, no need to be an ass to me just because I disagree with you wholeheartedly in the men's rights threads.
It's such a safer environment, no worries about cops, tickets, or your car getting impounded. And on top of that, if they really say they take "racing" so seriously, why wouldn't they want to do it in a proper environement when the 1/4 times are acurrately documented? There is a REAL tree to start at and you get your time on the big board at every pass and you get a printed slip to brag to your friends with.
I don't understand why they don't just go there and race eachother there? Are tracks really THAT hard to find?
I think most of these kids are intimidated by the track, but seriously, tracks are purpose built for racing, and that's where it should be done.

I'm 100% with you on this point, but the cops taking property as in this case has caused lots of problems in the past. Extending this 'priviledge' of property theft is dangerous and it should be outlawed not extended.
An ass? Come on. You did ignore his points and just left an irreverent comment...one that could easily be interpreted as you being an ass.
No lot owner will give permission due to liability issues, so that's out.
This is a form of late night entertainment, and legit avenues have no offer to fill the needs that street racers are going for.
Spline, you find that a lot of people want to race against a rotary and see how they do?
Willy-nilly confiscation isn't the solution...big time arrests and jail time are.
