OS X Lite on a Palm? Hints to upcoming iPad?

It's a video of OS X booting and running on a Palm IIIc device.

<a href="http://home.no.net/macosx/Xpalm.mp4"; target="_blank">Right click me or control click me, and save me to disk.</a>

It's encoded in MPEG-4 format, so you'll need Quicktime 6 to view it.

It's more than a simple video clip recorded somewhere else and then played back on the Palm since the user interacts with it.

I'm puzzled. Its obviously a fake unless that's not a normal Palm IIIc.

I just watched it double size and it seems to be genuinely on the screen. The filmer does seem to be interacting with it too, unless they are just clicking on a movie.

    Things I found odd:
    • Why a Palm 3c?

    • The MacOS X bootup screen is enlarged, but X isn't (tiny dock)

    • Its faster than my Powerbook G3

    • Why is an Apple branded IBM HD taped to it?

    • Does X normally say "Preparing L2 cache"?

    Curious...

Does a palm even have L2 cache?

I take it the video creator wants us to believe that the hard drive is being powered off of the Palm's battery!?

It would have been slightly more credible if they had used the hard drive from an iPod.

    I think its crap.

Why does everyone really want some sort of 'OSX Lite' on a handheld. I have a 19 inch monitor, running at 1600x1200, and OSX uses up a ton of space that could be used for windows. On a 320x200 4inch screen, or whatever those old palms had, I wouldn't imagine you could do much. Also, i have a 450Mhz G4, and a palm3 has what, a 16Mhz dragonball processor (which isn't even PowerPC), so I really kind of doubt you'd have a great time running Darwin, let alone OSX on it, without a lot of hacking.

And i think he's using graffiti strokes for text input. Whats the character for return in inkwell/ink/newton?

Also, love the tape holding the sides together.

Someone could have written a program to look like X. Not much was done besides boot up.

[edit] So I take it we won't be seeing this on ThinkSecret this weekend?

The HD is connected to the Palm hotsync connector and the shot seems much too long to be practiced.

    There are no obvious edits.

I can't see how it can be real, but can't see how it was faked either...

Prototypes are not always shiny glossy things though, they're often cobbled together from older parts with new innards.

    I'd like to see more.

It looks very convincing, but I think it's a fake. The input from the user could have been synchronised by using audio clues which we can't hear.

Does Palm even have a touch screen? Surely on a Palm you can only use the stylus on that panel at the bottom?

Seems odd though because the rest of it was very convincing. Notice that the menus and and scrollbars are all proportionately bigger than in OS X on the Mac. Someone obviously went to a lot of trouble to fake it.

No, it's very unlikely you will since it's obviously a fake. ThinkSecret's moral rectititude does not permit it to post misinformation.

Babydog, that camera has a 60minute tape in it and they can shoot it as many times as they want to until it looks good. There's a detectable disconnect between the movement of the user's movments and the corresponding on-screen display.

It does look real. Anyway someone could basically just be using the Palm as a monitor? The hard drive is obviously where X is being booted from as I don't think the palm has a gig HD. As far as speed tho, holy **** if it didn't take 3 minutes to boot that thing, hahaha. Not much of a 'lite' OSX, lol

The hoaxes are getting more and more elaborate it looks like.

My guess goes along with the palm merely being used as a monitor. If you notice, you never get to see if there is anything attached at the bottom of the palm. My guess is there is a cable attached and the palm is merely acting as a screen for a desktop cpu.

It would be easy to syncronize the stylus movements with mouse movements elsewhere.

why do you waste your time posting this stuff if Apple's going out of business in two years? (or is it 3, or 5??? For an expert you're pretty bad! )

Is there any way someone could resave this into QuickTime 5? I'd love to see the hoax, but I'm not adventurous to try QT 6 yet.

Perhaps it's an Apple device disguised in a Palm IIIc case.

Well this is what I was thinking... Granted I wanna believe but if you were going to protype new hardware would you start off by buying up custom color touch screens just to fry em in the building process or would you buy up a bunch of off old stuff that has a similar screen that you can use and abuse all you like and if it dies rip open another box...

Yea like I said I wanna believe but this one does look good and so far nobody has been able to pick it apart.

First you gotta know that doesn't have Palm IIIc guts in it... Sorry but if someone tried to sell me on that forget it. Second if it did then you could forget about powering that 2.5" drive a Palm IIIc couldn't do it.

Nope my bet is either some pretty amazing trick or...

A Palm IIIc cracked open (keeping the screen) and the guts were replaced with a custom board with a battery similar to that used in the iPod.

That wasn't a finished product that's for sure... Oh and it must be running Jag (if its real) since it has Ink and if I'm not mistaken I think I see 'menu icons' in the "go" menu... hard to tell since it's fuzzy.
