You're stranded on a desert island and you've got one CD

Here's a little challenge for all you music aficionados: You're stranded on a desert island and you get to have ONE music CD with you. It can be a mixed one that you made yourself before getting stuck or it can be a regular CD. Your choice.

What would you take? If it's a mixed CD, what would be on it?

One rule: the CD is a regular length cd - 80 minutes or less.

I'll start:

I don't know what the entire CD would have, but I know that Fake Plastic Trees would be on it.

Fat lot of good it will do us..You didn't say anything about bringing a CD player...or everlasting batteries or ear phones...

But in the spirit of torture I'd bring a CD "spoken version " of the Entire Encyclopedia Brittanica with Oxford Dictionary for all those cryptic crosswords I love doing.

Oh and a speaker designed to look like a parrot that could talk to me...

Those are the rules. If you don't wanna play, go to your own sandbox.

I don't know, I just thought it would require some deep thought about what you think are absolutely essential songs or albums.

And, Aquafire, this isn't a debate. Don't be an ass. Just kidding.... of course you've got a CD player. And it runs on solar power.

One of those mood CDs that plays nothing but the sounds of tropical bird calls and ocean surf.

    I'll just bring my iPod.

One cd? Umh ... one that I did a few years ago and that I can provenly listen to for months and months. It has about half of the tracks of Peter Gabriel / Passian and half Apocalyptic / Cult. Quite different of each other, but I found an order for them that sounds really good.

Why one cd? I'd rather have an iPod with an everlasting battery than a cd and no cd player.

The reason I started this thread was because I wanted a way to get some ideas for mixed cds or purchases that I should make. If it's essential enough for you to take it as your only music, then it must be good. Personally, I'd take my iPod too. But what would be on it?

    Hmm ... only 1 disc.

    Store bought:

    My Bloody Valentine 'Loveless'

(12 years later, and still my favourite album)

    -or-

    2 Many DJ's 'Radio Soulwax Vol. 2'

(45 well-mixed tracks, from The Stooges to Royksopp. Hard to get bored with this one!)

    Home-made compilation:

01 - My Bloody Valentine 'Soon'

02 - Slowdive 'In Mind' (Reload Mix)

    03 - Aphex Twin 'Heliosphan'

04 - Boards Of Canada 'Everything You Do Is A Balloon'

    05 - Bola 'Aguilla'

    06 - u-Ziq 'Swan Vesta'

07 - Bjork 'Joga (Alec Empire Hardcore Mix)'

08 - Mental Cube 'Q (Santa Monica Mix)'

09 - LFO 'We Are Back'

    10 - Jega 'Norton Midgate'

11 - Rolling Stones '2000 Light Years From Home'

12 - Duran Duran 'Planet Earth'

13 - The KLF 'America No More'

One CD - that is awfully tough.

    I've narrowed it to two:

Skinny Puppy: Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse

    Slowdive: Blueday

(Joy Division: Closer would be a good selection if you aren't planning on living too long on the island

My CD would have to be light enough to not drive me insane, yet varied enough to not drive me insane...so, for a storebought I'd have to pick:

    Ween - Chocolate & Cheese

I think it would have to be something that has really stood the test of time and has many layers to permit repeated listening. Hmm, I guess that rules out the pop/rock music you kids listen to on both counts

    Bach: art of the fugue.

Forgetting the fact that nothing will survive repeated exclusive listening, I'd STILL (I have mentioned this album before) take "Disintegration" from The Cure.

I thought you'd chime in with that. I need to give it a re-listen. For repeated listening, I'd go with ok computer.

the idea that you need more intelligence, or have to be "deeper" to listen to centuries old european music is ludicrous.
