What's the point of indexing?

What is the point of indexing a HD? Came across the option in the get info tab tonight and was wondering. Thanks

    It allows you to search within the content of files. For instance, if you log iChats, and you indexed the folder that the logs are stored in, you would be able to search for words that are actually within the log files.
