Until Apple changes the NO PDA's FOR YOU slogan nothing will happen on that angle. On the Phone issue. Hum.. Tough one. The Global Village bondage which has been living on in all the recent macs will eventually have to come to an end. Whatever the current hardware config is does not allow the use of the modem. Is this a software limitation? (I think I read somewhere that this was hardware). An iPhone app would be handy. Maybe even using telephony too. I'd like to see such an iApp. So my answer, in summary. iPDA. No. iPhone. Maybe.

Further note (sorry, I didn't address the CELL part of your question). Cell phone connection with OS X? Too many brands, too little usablity. An Apple branded cell phone? Not a chance. What else can an iApp do? You mean link to the phone carrier's website to download voicemail? Agian, not enough usage, too many brands. I don't see a risky strategic alliance in Apple's future.

There is much more than just those two things.

Cell Phone-iPhone (Hardware?) and iCall (iApp)

PDA-iPad (Hardware?) and its OS along with an iSync (Software?)

Digital Camecorder- Lucida (Hardware?) and iMovie.

Digital Camera- Lucida (Hardware?) and iPhoto.

I'm sure iChat will evolve into a telephony / cell messaging / video chat client eventually... much like Microsoft's Windows Messenger.

I don't think we can even concieve of what Apple has coming next. Two suggest that there are only two Digital Hub devices to go shows a lack of vision.

No, because Jobs is on record saying that people watch TV in the living room and Apple has no interest going there.

I agree with this. If you look at the<a href="http://www.cupertino.de/pages/filme/mov_19/universe.html"; target="_blank">iBook Universe Commercial</a>, which is the first commercial to present the Digital Hub idea to the world, there are five things orbiting the iBook: an mp3 player, a digital camcorder, a digital camera, a pda, and a cd player (for the you can ever burn cds on it phrase). The mp3 player has been taken care of as has the cd-player with the drag and drop decktop burning in osx, but the camera, camcorder, and pda haven't...

We have seen iMovie, iDVD, iTunes & iPhoto make all these once complex tasks simplier and easy to use. They have become practical, useful and the envy of both software and hardware manufacturers throughout the industry.

    This should be next....!

However, the initial iPhone has already been created and abandoned by Microsoft. Does anyone remember the MicroSoft Cordless Phone. This is/was a great concept, however, one that can be improved upon and made simplier by Apple. Here is the specs.....

    Microsoft® Cordless Phone System

OverviewManage your calls using the power of our PC. The Microsoft Cordless Phone System uses your PC to help you manage your busy life with a sophisticated voice-mail system, Voice Command dialing and new ways to handle incoming calls.

The Call Manager software included gives you sophisticated voice mail, Voice Command dialing, and enhanced caller ID features. Benefits You can easily place calls by simply saying a short phrase, like "call Mom." Create a flexible voice-mail system with individual mailboxes. Create private greetings for each caller to personalize your voice-mail system. Hear the incoming caller's name before you pick up the phone with Caller ID Announce. Retrieve voice mail messages from anywhere, and get notified of new or urgent messages at your cell phone or pager. Prioritize special callers, automatically sending other callers to voice mail or block unwanted callers altogether.

    Standard Features

Sophisticated voice mail and message management The Microsoft Cordless Phone System gives you multiple voice mailboxes, so you can direct callers to the appropriate mailbox, for business or personal use, for any member of the family.

Voice Command dialing Voice Command allows you to place calls by simply speaking into your phone. With Voice Command, you'll never have to remember another phone number. Just say the name of the person you want to call and Voice Command will dial for you.

    Enhanced caller ID features:

Create custom announcements for incoming calls, block unwanted calls, give special callers higher priority, and create individual greetings. Have your phone and PC announce the name of the person calling, so you can take the call or send it to voice mail.

900MHz radio frequency The 40 channel, 900MHz cordless phone gives you greater range and clarity than a standard cordless phone. Enjoy static free phone conversations from any room in the house.

    Call History:

The Call Manager software logs all incoming and outgoing calls to and from the Microsoft Phone System, giving you a complete record of your phone activity.

    Remote message notification and access:

When you're away from your home or office, the Microsoft Phone System can notify you of important messages on your cell phone, pager or at a remote phone number. You can also easily check messages by dialing from a remote location.

    ================================

Combine this with the personal PBX software-hardware. <a href="http://www.talkswitch.com/"; target="_blank">http://www.talkswitch.com/</a>; has a device around the same size as your DSL modem or personal hub/gateway.

Combine all this together while using the Airport Base Station as the base for the phone and you have once very useful and practical device. Of course it could work without your computer on, by why would you want to...

    Any thoughts?

    Yup, PDAs/PIMs and telephony/voice communications/videoconferencing. That's pretty much it.

Though I do think Apple will realize they're making a mistake by ignoring television, just like they realized they made a mistake by going DVD first and ignoring CD-RW for all those months/years. Hell, if there's an iApp to put together movies, and an iApp to burn movies to a DVD to watch in your living room, I don't see why there can't be an iApp that has TiVo-like functions and capturing abilities, plus I'm sure part of it would be the ability to share all of the things you've made on your digital hub Mac out on the big screen in your living room. Perhaps even remote-controlling your Mac, or something to do with HDTV... There's all sorts of possibilities there.

Boy, you hit it right on the button.

It would also be nice if you could phone into your Mac and check on things, if you could place calls directly through your Mac without a handset, somehow integrate cell phone usage, maybe videoconferencing/videophones, use VoIP internet telephony, etc etc.. Apple could really integrate all of these communication-related tasks well. Though the video stuff might be a separate app and the cell phone linkage might just be built in to Mac OS X.
