How does the Radeon 9600 Pro compare with the GeForce FX5200 Ultra regarding action game play? It is only 50 dollars more on the lower priced G5s. I know the 9800 Pro is the best but I can't see spending an extra 350 dollars.
I am pretty sure you can put a 4X card in the G5, it just wont fully utilize the bandwidth available.
As for adding an aftermarket 9800, I know that some Apple service providers can Service Stock order parts from Apple, although it usually is a bit more expensive than retail, it COULD be one way to get an 8X 9800.

Concerning game-play the Radeon 9600 pro worth the 50 $ of difference. On the benchmarks i have seen, it's faster, not dramitacally, but nicely.
My advice take the 9600 pro : it would be nice for early all today games, until doom 3 arrive. And for Doom 3 even radeon 9800 pro will be not awesome, the next generation of GPU will welcome.
It's better to wait for new Gpu, like the R400 from ATI.
Well get the radeon 9800, it will add a lot more life to your machine. As for Doom 3? No way, the makers of doom 3 practically went back to the drawing boad when they saw the half life 2 footage. Half Life 2 pushes hardware further.
Plus a radeon 9800 will run Half Life 2 just fine, quite well in fact, considering the demo machines that were used for the showing of HL2 were 3Ghz P4s with a radeon 9800.

9800 BTO is 8x APG whereas retail will only be 4x APG. You'll add value and life to your mac 1-2 years from now by spending the extra cash if you can.
