Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy an optical mouse. I want to spend less than $30.

What is the best deal for money?

I came across these two models. Any suggestions?

I second the MX 300. It's comfortable, has useful OS X software to customize its buttons, and it works equally well left- or right-handed (unlike its big brothers the 500 and 700). It isn't cordless, but it does have a fairly long cord.

Good timing on this thread, seeing as how I finally bought my first two-button/scroll wheel optical mouse.

I got a Logitech something or other:

It's a tad smaller than Apple's mouse, but it's not one of those ridiculously tiny "mini mice" (even though it has "mini" in its name).

It's actually quite comfortable and I just plugged it in and it works like a charm. I really got tired of reaching for the Control key all the time. And I'm REALLY digging the whole idea of the scroll wheel.

BTW, the link above shows this thing listing at $29 or so...but I got it this past weekend at my local Wal-Mart and it was only $18.

It's plastic (looks metal) and is a tad lighter than Apple's mouse. And the cable on it is exactly as long as the one of the white Apple Pro mouse, so it should easily reach to the left-side USB port on an iBook or PowerBook for all you right-handers out there.

No complaints really. Been a week and I like it fine.

Logitech MX 700 (or 500, if you want wired). 9 button mouse. I never thought I'd use them all, but I do. Nice mouse with only one drawback: it's only right handed. But it's so good, I'll forgive that shortcoming.

Actually I had an MX700 which I got rid of because I hated the wireless. Too many cords littering my desk, didn't want to fiddle with getting the receiver to actually receive.

But this is how I assigned my buttons:

    1. left click

    2. right click

    3. scroll click = command click (open link in new tab)

    4. forward button = command right (go forward in web history)

    5. back button = command left (go back in web history)

    6. up button = command shift right (move to next tab)

    7. down button = command shift left (move to previous tab)

    8. middle button = command W (close tab)

There were only 8 buttons. Then of course there was the scroll wheel.
