Don't change iBook's future form factor

Apple has a real hit with the design of the iBook.

But at some point, it'll go G4. My hope is that this won't affect it's form factor. I can't see much room for improvement. Perhaps it can go a tad thinner (to 1.2") but not much more.

Different finishes or colours might be introduced but hopefully Apple won't tamper by adding removable bays and or handles.

    Eventually will go G4 is the key idea here. Apple has publicly stated that they like the iBook being G3, and yes, I love its form factor. But when it eventually moves to a G4, its form WILL change. Significantly. No way it'll be thinner if it keeps the poly-carbonate body, it would be too flimsy and not rugged like it should be.

    Also, there's not enough cooling in the iBook to allow for a G4 right now. Note how the TiBooks have the same style vents on the sides that the iBook does (they are where the Ti's Airport antennae are) but that the Ti also needed a vent in the back with a big powerful LOUD fan. And it wasn't even good enough in the original, they needed to add slats to the flap in the revision so cooling would continue. And even with those, my Ti 667 still has a loud f'n fan a lot of the time. I don't mind because I know its working, but the iBook shouldn't need this. I imagine the new iBook will be designed with a thin metal shell (not Titanium though...most likely Aluminum due to its heat conductivity) surrounded by the same clear polycarbonate plastic. That way the entire case would become its heat sink, but would stay cooler to the touch than the Titanium, which is known to be a dandy portable griddle <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    Fans will also play a part in the G4 iBook, but I imagine that like they did with the iMac, they will make it non-intrusive, unlike the Quicksilver and TiBook tornados.

    The iBook needs a G4 yesterday. Altivec is such an integral part of OS X and so many multimedia apps. Apple is crazy to keep the iBook G3.

    Cooling will not be a problem on a G4 iBook, because by the time the iBook gets a G4, the chip will have transitioned to .13-micron SOI. MUCH COOLER&gt;

    new enclosure or not, I'd really like to be able to do something about the size of the trackpad. I manage to twitch my thumbs across it about seven hundred and eighty-six times a day when I'm typing. Being able to tell it to ignore the edges or something would be nice. Or a small snap on cover that masks the edges would work as well. Oh well. I guess if that's my biggest beef, it must be pretty good, eh?

    I really hope they don'tr change the form factor. Regardless of a G3 or G4, it should stay the same for a long time to come.

    I would think that a G4 iBook would render it useless in its consumer market. The iBook is in fact targeted mainly to students, who need a compact computer rather than a big, heavy hot rod. Nobody's going to go Photoshopping with an iBook anyway.

    A second factor is cost. Can you imagine how relatively expensive a G4 iBook would be? It would completely destroy the economy concept. There would be no need for an iBook with a G4 in Apple's product line.

    The bottom line is, there already is a G4 iBook. It's called the PowerBook G4.

    I was with you until that line...

    I agree that the iBook is damn near perfect, but more speed never hurts.

    You do know that you can tell it to ignore the mouse when typing right? I set mine that way and it hasn't been a problem since.

    I agree with eveything except that line too. I disagree with that line because I "go photoshopping" with my iBook 700 everyday. I'm a Graphic Artist and I use my iBook with Photoshop 6 & 7 everyday that I work. Granted, at times with certain filters it can get a bit sluggish, but that moment is rare.
