Rolling Stone mag... Top 100 Guitarists of All Time

Posted:
in General Discussion edited January 2014
Don't know if it was the most recent issue, but I found their picks to be pretty much on point with a few pleasant surprises.

#1 Jimi Hendrix of course

#2 Duane Allman

#3 I think was BB King

#4 Clapton

Of course Townsend, Richards, Paige and Stevie Ray Vaughn made the list.

A few pleasant surprises, the guitarists for Radiohead (both) and Jack White from the White Stripes. I'm glad that Brian May made the list.

Anyone who saw that list disgruntled with the choices or happy to see your favorite make it? Anyone on the list that should have been left out or anyone left out that should have been there?

Whoa, seriously? I'm not a "guitar guy" by any means, but that seems awfully low. He's my favorite, and I would've guessed a top 20 ranking at least.

Yeah Eddie is great, but you have to consider the axe-men he is up against. He is definitely one of the best.

Yes, it's the current issue. This was actually a thread recently. Here's my post from the second page, with the entire list for those asking:

(Eddie Van Halen at 70, Junior Brown didn't make the top 100)

Jimi Hendrix: The Greatest Guitarist of All Time

WHOOPS - beaten by a few seconds. I'll delete the list, but keep the cool shot of Jimi.

General observation, it seems pretty blues biased.

That's where the best guitarists are.

  • Reply 11 of 61
Well a lot of the guitarists of the 50s 60s and 70s era of Rock were heavily influenced by the Blues. Hell, you can even hear a little bit of it in Slash's guitar work. Too bad GnR didn't have the staying power to allow Slash to show the world some more of his stuff. Too volatile of a band makeup I guess, but still some hot shit.

I've only recently got into the Blues myself, wish I had been introduced to it earlier in life.

I would've thought Steve Vai would be on the list.

Steve Vai, I don't think his stint in White Snake left him too much credibility. Plus not too many are familiar with him.

    Good point about Whitesnake.

I thought his solo albums were fairly well known, now I feel all hip and stuff!

I've only ever heard "War and Peace", Good Stuff. I think also we didn't get to see enough of him as with Slash.

i was kind of surprised too. i mean, the grateful dead is my favorite band, but thats more for psychodelic reasons. i don't think of Jerry as one of the greatest. he is very skilled though.

Well, I scanned the list. Having no Geordie Walker, David Gilmour at 82 and Curt Cobain was near the top, I called bullshit on Rolling Stone. Most popular? Sure. Best? Ha!
