I assume that by image viewing you mean an app like Preview? It comes with the OS.

GraphicConverter
wins hands-down for viewing images. It can read about 175 different image formats and export to about 75 different formats.
It's also a great Photoshop-supplement as it has a number of very good image-editing capabilities.

...but if you want something freeware (open source, in fact), ToyViewer is my favourite.

If only iPhoto didn't become slower then my grandmother with a few hundred pics in it...
Is there a key combo to make a photo in iPhoto be viewed full screen? It's a pain to have to export it and and use GraphicConverter.

What do you mean? If you want:
a. Uses up organizing window... click green button to maximize window, then double-click image.
b. Uses up entire screen... click image, then click play button. Slideshow will start. Then click the mouse to get out.
