Gnome 2.4 on Darwin

Has anyone gotten GNOME 2.4 (the latest release) to run on Darwin (no Aqua/Quartz-WM running)? I'm just about to try and get that working.. though I know and I bet Fink is only gonna still have GNOME 1.4 in stable. >.< It's either that or I'll have to DL a page worth of links.... >.<

Darwinports from OpenDarwin has a port of 2.2 (iirc). That's not 2.4, but it's closer than 1.4.

I'm actually building it right now to see if it will run on Darwin/x86.

Cool. Let us know how that turns out. BTW Thanks for the Darwinports referral. I'm getting the Ports Manager.app cvs source code right now. Also: Where would I find the x86 Darwin distro? Can I download it somewhere?

The latest darwin/x86 release from apple is 6.0.2 (which corresponds to 10.2.0) and it is full of bugs and broken "stuff"

The latest release available is from OpenDarwin and is version 6.6.2 which corresponds with OS X 10.2.6. It was built straight from Apple's source. It is available for x86 and ppc.

    http://www.opendarwin.org/downloads/

    I recommend the 6.6.2 release...

Hmm.. Would pure Darwin run on a PowerMac 8500/120? My brother wants to run a server and I'd prefer it to on a separate machine from mine.

Also: here's the error I recieved when trying to build GNOME from the OpenDarwin distribution:

    http://darwinports.gene-hacker.net:8080/72

    Thanks all

I believe the XPostFacto project will allow you to run darwin or OS X on a 8500 (even though apple only supports a G3 or higher).

    http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/XPostFacto/

As for the GNOME error: I don't know. You could contact the port maintainer (for the dependency that won't build). You could also try updating the dports tree by executing this command in the darwinports/dports directory:

    cvs -z3 update -dP

    See:

    Updating DarwinPorts

What does your brother want to run a server for? Web? FTP? Darwin may not be the best choice. Give me more info and I may be able to tell you if it is done easily.

He wants to run a filesharing server (a direct connect hub to be exact). Would a 1 GB hard drive be sufficent enough to install Darwin onto?

Hmm... it could probably be done, but I haven't personally done it. I have used mine for a webserver and an ftp server though. Do you want to use SAMBA or Apple's File Server? I'm pretty sure SAMBA works, but I don't know about Apple's File Server. I think it may not be opensource (not sure, so don't quote me).

I'm not sure if 1 GB is enough or not. If it is, it would probably be pretty full after you get Darwin installed.

Be warned: Darwin is NOT user-friendly. Not at all.

Heh. You've misunderstood the type of server I mentioned. A Direct Connect hub is different than what you think. I'd wanna try and compile OpenDCHub. I have that running on my x86 comp as we speak.....

    Heh. OK.

Let me know if you have any questions. OpenDarwin's HOW-TOs and FAQ are the best places to look first.

When you say that Darwin isn't user friendly... what do you mean? I use it within OS X's Aqua with the Terminal app and I've used >console mode several times. I think I'd be okay with it. Does the CD distro of Darwin from OpenDarwin.org include Window Managers? or would I have to get one elsewhere? I'd need to know this because I'd find it sort of annoying to download one using the command line unless I can find the CVS links...

    Thanks,

After you install Darwin and reboot, you get a login. The only login available is root with an empty password. So then you end up with a screen with this:

    Code:

    [localhost:~] root#

....and that is it. X11 and twm and installed, but they aren't in your default path, so you want to add
    Code:

    set path=($path /usr/X11R6/bin)

to your .cshrc file (in your home dir).

Then logout and login and type "startx"

Then you will have the default window manager, twm. If you install DarwinPorts, then you can use it to build another window manager. The ones currently available from darwinports (that I know of) are:

    blackbox

    fluxbox

    fvwm

    metacity

oroborus (which has an aqua theme btw)

    windowmaker

Gnome and KDE can also be built from DarwinPorts. I personally haven't built GNOME, but I know that KDE works (I was using it for quite a while).

So, for info to install DarwinPorts, see the DarwinPorts User Guide:

    http://darwinports.gene-hacker.net/docs/guide/

    and the OpenDarwin DarwinPorts page:

    http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/darwinports/

Also, just FYI. The unofficial Darwin FAQ is here:

Heh.. well... I just read that Darwin for PPC will only install on hardware that supports OS X 10.2.6 so our old 8500/120 just won't kick it. Thanks for the info anyway.. I may partition the hard drive here and run OS X/Darwin and Darwin Darwin. Once I have that going would I be able to run MacOnLinux?

    Thanks,

Ahh... but Darwin will run on an 8500, so will Mac OS X. Apple just doesn't support it.

See the XPostFacto project (I think I mentioned that earlier in this thread).

okay cool. Would I need to have a Mac OS installed on there to use Dar? if I do then it would be impossible... 1 GB wont be enough for 2 OS's....
