You do know that the Athlon64 uses the same chip interconnect technology - HyperTransport - as the G5/PPC970 , right?

Bzzzzzzzt! The G5 uses HyperTransport for connecting the North bridge to - well, to the I/O controllers to the south of it. The elastic bus that connects the two CPUs to the system controller is /not/ HyperTransport.

    Care to try again?

Some results from a dual G5 owner... coutsey of dead_kennedy of Quake3World.com forums:

    Code:

the reference machine, numbers first, is: Dual G4 @ 1.42 Ghz.

    1.5GB crucial cl2 RAM. Ati Retail Radeon 9800pro. 10.2.6.

the g5 machine, numbers second, is a stock dual 2ghz,

1.5GB cl3 RAM (apple and crucial). Ati Retail Radeon 9800pro. 10.2.7.

    q3a 1.32 g4. fresh config, then chose ?HQ? and added ?s_chunksize 4096?.

    1024 221 372

    1280 189 348

    1600 193 208

    boli?s config. http://homepage.mac.com/boli/boli_q3config.cfg .

    0640 487 677

    1280 376 393

    1600 359 368

all i did to bench is described above (thus, sound was on,

no other tweaks done, same methodology on both machines,

etc.) single monitor attached to the r9800.

    NOW we're talking!

Those fps for the G5 look amazing. In terms of...a few years back the G4 machines were gasping to get above 50 fps and Pentium machines were well past the 100 fps.

    Now look at those numbers!

600 plus fps at the lowest res'. Almost 400 fps in a 1000x1000? That's incredible.

The fps doesn't mean that much to me at this level from platform to platform.

Wait until we have Quake 4 and Panther running on a G5 with all apps optimised.

Then comparisons from Athlon 64 to G5 might mean something.

I wish AMD well in their fight with Intel.

But let's face it, AMD just make chips. Apple make a great OS on great hardware.

By the time Panther ships then surely Rev B machines will be just around the corner. Things are only going to get better for the G5.

...and it can't be long before a bump to Ati and Nvidia cards is a comin'. There's always that 'autumn' refresh, eh?

The Athlon 64 just about beats a 3.2 gig P4. Not impressed. Is the Athlon clocked at 2 gig? I suppose it makes it roughly comparable to the G5?

Speaking of game benches, Unreal 2004 is supposed to be released on Mac just about at the same time as the Windblows version.

Things have been looking good for Mac gaming for sometime.

I wonder how Panther and Rev B G5 will bench on Unreal 2004?

Surely a LOT better than with Jaguar, Rev A G5 and Unreal 2003!

Drivers are optimized alot in Panther, and UT2k4 will be optimised for G5, at least to some extent. There is no reason (if ruling out code quality) the G5 should perform subpar at games.
