How to convert AVI to MPEG?

I've got a bunch of AVI files that I like to convert to MPEG in order to view on my TV's DVD/VCD player. Is there any application that does just that? Thanks

I'm not totally sure, but I think Quicktime Pro will do this.

    NO, it doesn't!

qt has NOT the ability to export in mpg standard. the mpg plug-in you can buy from apple is just for playback...-

.avi btw is a so called "container", not a compression standard (as quicktime, which is a container not a ...). many .avis are not playable with qt pro player, 'cause they contain standards which are not available for qt....-

to convert an .avi file into a mpg(1 for a vcd or 2 for a dvd) look for a tool called ffmpeg at versiontracker......

    or:

try to import your .avi into iMovie and export it to idvd...- give it a try.- maybe you're lucky, and your system supports this very .avi file (and you do have a superdrive ;-))

Well, since I have QT Pro, I installed the 3ivx and DivX QT plugin and tried to export an .avi movie to MPEG4. It worked; painfully slow though. I guess what's missing now is the ability to export to MPEG 1 and 2..... and even 3. Is there anyway to do that with the setup I have now?

Sorry, somebody gotta say it. There is MUCH better porn available as MPEGs so dump the avis. This is an 'age old' thing which every mac user discovers. They avis use funky legal tricks which your Mac didn't buy the rights to be able to do. Some programs can 'try' but on average I've only gotten 1 in 5 or so to convert. I say just get fresh pron.

Hardly 'coming out'. But if you had been here for the last oh.... 3-4 years you would know how many threads there have been just like this an in 99% of them they are converting pron. Srrythtthswsntthcs.
