I need movie suggestions

Since getting Netflix my wife and I have done about 2-3 movies a week. We're running out. We've seen most everything good that has come out in the last year or so. We've been going back and hitting old classics that we haven't already seen. Foreign movies are drying up for us.

We're running out. Any suggestions? Nothing typical ... we've seen it.

I'm also on Netflix and like to get several films by a single director. After Mulholland Dr., I got all (or most) of Lynch's movies. Unfortunately they don't have Eraserhead. Also I've done: Kurosawa's movies, Coen brother's movies, Ingmar Bergman's movies, Woody Allen movies, Pedro Almodovar, Michael Moore ( ). I also went through a classic silent/old movie phase: Caligari, Metropolis, Nosferatu, Modern Times, some others. See if you can find a film text book and you'll get tons of ideas.

Well, I'm a product of the '80s generation. I've been revisiting the classic Spielberg films like DUEL, SUGARLAND EXPRESS and EMPIRE OF THE SUN.

A really good forgotten Copolla/Lucas film is TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM.

Ridley Scott's early work is also incredible to revisit, THE DUELLISTS, ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER. I'm even a fan of 1492: CONQUEST OF PARADISE even though I don't care for Depardieu (sp?).

Peter Jackson's first films are pretty interesting too, HEAVENLY CREATURES and THE FRIGHTENERS.

Ron Howard's first few films are really good, NIGHT SHIFT, GUNG HO, BACKDRAFT and FAR AND AWAY.

John McTiernan, PREDATOR, DIE HARD, RED OCTOBER

John Woo, THE KILLER, BULLET IN THE HEAD, ONCE A THIEF, HARD BOILED

Excellent suggestions so far! Hope these aren't too typical...

Another superb early Coppola film is The Conversation, made right in between the first two Godfather pictures.

Warner Brothers has been re-releasing many of its old classics in awesome new DVD editions lately; with Bogart starrers like Casablanca and the Treasure of the Sierra Madre it's hard to go wrong.

The films of David Lean are always worth revisiting, especially now that most are more accessible on DVD: Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, and of course the later Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.

Carol Reed's The Third Man remains a personal favourite of mine, and a classic in the noir genre. On the Criterion DVD it has never looked more stunning.

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

Also, do you they have the original version of "Solaris"? Even though its scifi, it defiantly has appeal for women.

If you like foreign films, and are partial to directors, look up Werner Herzog. I recommend MY BEST FIEND, a documentary about the films Herzog made with Klaus Kinski. It's a perfect introduction to the 5 films they made together.

If you see this you'll get an introduction to what's in the 5 films and most likely want to see them. So, consider this rental 6 in 1.

City of God is on my list but I guess it's not out yet of DVD? I assume that "nuovo cinema paradiso" is the "director's cut"? That was horrible and ruined the original for me. Very very disappointed with it. Somethings are best left on the cutting room floor. I'll look into the rest. Netflix is weak with foreign movies but they are getting better.

I have the new one on my list. It got a good review from Ebert. I'll watch that and then look into the older one.

    Total Recall

    Commando

    Rambos I, II and III

    The Omega Man

    Missing in Action

    Dirty Harry

    Magnum Force

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

    Highlander (the first)

Get yourself a case and some nachos, and enjoy.

    I forgot to include:

Mad Max 1, 2 (The Road Warrior), and 3 (Beyond Thunderdome).

Get yourself another case and a platter of cheese sandwiches for these.

One of the greatest films ever made - noir or otherwise.

Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles: the latter makes the most noteworthy entrance in cinema (something Roger Ebert likes to mention). I was originally inspired to see this film after viewing their work together on "Citizen Kane" and - in an actor-director relationship - "The Magnificent Ambersons."

Two things to note with this film: 1.) it was filmed in Vienna soon after WWII, and 2.) the soundtrack is quite unique.

sweet, i just signed up with netflix this month.

    this thread rules.

also, i'd recommend things like the first few seasons of X-files (before they were lame) or watching 24 the way it was meant to be watched.

    Scott,

A few recommendations with an India theme:

    The Terrorist (1999)

    Monsoon Wedding

    Mission Kashmir

    American Desi

    Gandhi

    Bend it Like Beckham

    The Guru

None of these is a typical Bollywood movie. The first three were made in India, the last four in the West. Of them all, my favorite is The Terrorist.
