anyone know of an app. that will force quit a program via the GUI?

i'm using Apple Remote Desktop to work on a machine, but when an app hangs, you can't use the keystrokes to force quit.

the terminal works to kill the process, but it's a bit tough to really track apps. via the terminal while remotely adminning a machine.

anyone know of anything?

EDIT: NM, i'm a complete moron. didn't realize it was under the Blue apple.

Heh. There's also Process Viewer in the Utilities folder or with Panther there's the Activity Monitor.

Hmm...maybe, if the application you're in is not responding, the Force Quit menu item should stand out a little more.

Maybe that would be annoying, though. I dunno :-D

Option-click on the crashed application in the Dock, choose Force Quit.

"When in doubt, try the Option key and see what it does", that's my motto.

Option-clicking on a dock icon hides all other apps.

Maybe its different for a frozen app.

    Or, you mean ctrl-click.

Right, I should have said option-click-and-hold.

However, since control-clicking on the Dock -does- produce an immediate menu, you can also control-option-click the application's icon from the Dock and access the menu immediately, without the "hold" part.

    So:

Force Quit an application from the Dock, click the app's icon and:

    control-option-click, choose Force Quit.

    or:

    option-click-and-hold, choose Force Quit

    or:

click-and-hold and press option to see it toggle from Force Quit to Quit

Or if the GUI generally is unresponsive, you can still SSH into your machine (when enabled) and use good ol' "kill" command

I find that if you just click and hold on an item in the dock the menu pops up. If the application is not responding you can force quit, if still working then other options appear. No need for the control button.

You can also control click and hold option. And yes, if the application's not responding, they'll give you an option to force quit.

    To recap the Dock options:

    If app is crashed:

Click-and-hold app icon for 1 second. Popup menu should contain a "Force Quit" choice.

If app is not/not yet crashed:

Click-and-hold app icon for 1 second. Popup menu should only say "Quit". Hold the "Option" key to then see "Force Quit". Pressing "Option" will alternatingly show and hide "Force Quit" from the menu.

To bypass the 1 second delay, add the "Control" (CTRL) key to either of the above. The menu will instantly appear.

You don't "need' the "Control" button, but it's a good habit to get into when accessing Dock menus, since it's quicker. You need only press it while clicking, not for any longer.

cmd-option-ESC still works too, just like it did in Mac OS 9 and earlier.

    It looks prettier now though.

I'm a big fan of keyboard shortcuts.
