Your recognition of the iMac to Apple's recovery and current good fortune is shrewdly noted.

...especially as Apple attempts to 'Switch' PC users on to the mac.

It's Apple's best shot at that 10% target...

The current iMac is truly stunning. It just needs some stunning specs/price to go with it.

Personally, i'm not putting money on the barrelhead until I see a G5. I have a G3 350 B&W, and I'm happy enough with its performance in Video Editing and Photoshop to hold on to it until either the G5 is released, or I can buy a DP 1Ghz at cut rate prices. I know I'm not the only cheap-skate out there, and Steve knows it too.

I think we'll see new hardware soon. Even if its not at MWNY, its just around the corner.

Incidentally, Apple hasn't been hyping this MW, atleast not like they did for MWSF 02, maybe they're going low key (no PowerMacs) or maybe they saw how dissapointed people were by "just an LCD imac" which was not "WAY beyond the rumor sites"

Maybe Steve will come clean with us this year. Come out on stage and tell us how hard his life has been, maybe cry a little bit, and ask us to wait until August for the new G4. I would take that as an act of good faith, and not lose my temper with apple for holding out an extra 30 days for a slightly faster silicon wafer the size of a dime....

Personally, I'd jus tlike to see steve cry.

I disagree with you. Part of the move to a 10% market share is going to have to come from the buisness/professional market, particularly with Apples release of the X-Serve. Also Apple is buying up Media development software, so they are obviously making a major move to market hardware to that market soon. For this they will sell a LOT of computers for renderfarms and "workstations".

Dont get me wrong, Apple has been working hard on the consumer. But they wont make that % with the iMac/eMac combo alone. They also may need to reintroduce a low cost "headless" iMac with an upgradable video system to realize this market share goal.

You got to be kidding me?

You are right, nForce is indeed a motherboard, and i believe the name is to include the chipset that runs on the motherboard as well.

If nVidia follows it's pattern of updating it's geforce line of video cards every six months, then august would be the target month for them to release an upgraded/new video card.

I still think the nvidia/apple announcement in August will be the inclusion of the nforce(possibly the nforce2 which is speculated about being out soon.) motherboard in a new powermac,

    OR

we will see a new tower centered around nvidia's Nforce/2 motherboard, offering DDR capabilities, along with ata/100 support, along with an updated/new video card, as well as speed bumped G4's.

Come to think of it, that be the reason for a new case design as well.

    Also of note...

the nforce currently comes in two flavors for the pc.

you have the barebones setup, which is nothing more than the motherboard, with agp/pci/usb etc..

The nforce motherboard also comes in a version that is almost "ready to use" out of the box.

ie, it has a built in geforce2mx, 5.1 surround, and ethernet.

Which would lead me to think that apple could incorporate that version of the motherboard into their other lines, like the imac and emac, and save some $$$, and those savings would hopefully be passed on to the consumer.

well, i've got a bit of $$$ coming to me in a few weeks, and i WAS looking at an emac to fit my urge for an update to my imac g3 400, but if the imac gets a 17" flat panel AND stays at the same price point... damn. i would, however, like to see geforce 4 mx in the imac (i think... isn't that still lower on the scale than geforce 3 and geforce 4 titanium, yet still better than the geforce 2 mx?)

y'know, it's kinda ironic, but these slight but significant nudges in consumer models is making it hard to decide, while the powermac lines have made it pretty clear to me to hold onto my money until something earth-shattering happens.

does anyone else feel like this? i.e. the consumer's choice is now more difficult, but the professional's is clearly defined...

then again, not many consumers are like me cruising every rumor board in my spare time.

also, did anyone else see david f'n coursey on headline news talking about apple?!?! wow, i was amazed. before his little imac experiement, he probably would have dogged apple mercilessly. he did spill some beans on some rumors on national tv (hey david, hope you didn't want a PRESS PASS...), but, otherwise, was fairly good for apple's hype-machine, imho.

As a PC user, a 17?, 1 GHz, GF4, 133MHz sys bus, $1899 iMac would probably do it for me.

The next iPod-family device should come out at this macworld.

I don't know what it is, but the iPod project manager had a meeting with steve to ok the next device about 6 months ago.

It took about 6 months to design the iPod. It might have been 4 months of actual work, I don't remember.

What is it going to be?

what would you think of that: PowerMacs and Jaguar at MW, the iMac only gets a speedbump. new 17" and 19" ASDisplays. so this MW belongs to the pros - and no 17" iMac.

So you think Apple doesn't want to sell new products because nobody wants to buy their old products meaning Apple sells nothing - JYD you are funny!

to Cobra et all, re: [quote]

You HAVE to buy a overpriced display ranging from $1000.00 to $3500.00 to enjoy the big savings.

Whats wrong with that picture? <hr></blockquote>

here in lil ol New Zealand there's a simple $$ rebate for yr old machine against a current G4 tower (no screens attached). probably cos not too many high-priced screens were imported into this place to start with, so no excess inventory on hand. but the $$ rebate?? biggest yet & looks like classic EOL new machine time (so:CONFIRMED: nu towers soooon...!...)

wanna know when the offer ends? wish i could remember xaztly - it is soooon tho

Can you guys imagine Apple telling analysts what they are about to release? I can't. And can you imagine how PISSED off Apple would be to find out that one of them blabbed it to the press? I thought they would go ballistic. I think this is made up BS. And even if it was true, Apple would have a mind to hold off on iMac upgrades and pre-announce PowerMacs at the accelerated speeds.

I wonder if the Apple Executive's that sold their stock knew people would be pissed that no new PM would be released at MWNY so they sold, knowing after it hit low, they could buy it back, right before the August(?) release....

That would be quite shady. I'm sure someone would look into that.

Actually, they sold their stock a few days before their lowered earnings report. The sale has nothing to do with MWNY or the towers.

I am convinced that this is the most likely reason, and I don't think Steve would want all the press to review his flagship machines with 10.1.5 becuase it (10.1.5) makes the machine look much slower than it really is. If I was Steve Jobs there is no way I would launch them with 10.1.5 I would want the press and not just the Mac press to rave about these new machines.

Think about the speed jump that will be apparent if we get either a G4 1.5ghz with DDR and JAGUAR, or a G5 with the same.

    </strong><hr></blockquote>

Good point! Just imagine Steve announcing a speedbumped G4 (no matter what speed) with the words: It´s twice as fast as the Dual 1 GHz". In order to achieve this JAGUAR might actually be the key!

The only problem that I see with this is that the low-end computers will probably get a higher performance from Quartz Xtream by unloading GUI graphics to the Graphics card than the high end computers. My reasoning for this is that the low-end computers are taxed more by the software on a regular basis than the high end computers. True the graphics card is a major factor here, but QuartzeXtream is targeted for 32MB graphics cards (and will run on the 16MB iBook) and Its main function is to increase the responsiviness on the GUI. I may not know/understand all of its benefits though.

The Gay Blade (<a href="http://www.macedition.com/nmr/nmr_20020711.php"; target="_blank">NMR</a>) confirms no [Edit:] Powermac G4s at MWNY, but instead August possibly Seybold.

And yes, he confirms boosted G4s and not G5s.
