Or does noone actually really have a a real clue what's going to happen and what's not.

I think we've never had so many and so many low quality rumors before an MWNY before.

Either Apple is tighter, or there's nothing worth risking a job for.

For the first time in years, I'm not excited about this upcoming keynote. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I'm not expecting to go "wow" once it's over.

Plenty of people have a clue -- but they either aren't talking, or are insulted/ignored when they do talk. Regardless, there are so many rumours out there that weeding out the wheat from the chaff isn't easy unless you already know the score.

I definitely wouldn't say that noone has a clue...in the past couple of days, Think Secret has described virtually everything that will happen at the keynote, and they have essentially never been wrong.

    From ThinkSecret Dec 3, 2001:

The new pro desktops, believed to ship at Macworld Expo/San Francisco next month, will reportedly ship with a PowerPC 7460 G4 chip, code-named Apollo. While details of the chip have been available since the G4's release years ago, the 7460 has comprised the top of the G4 line and no Apple hardware has shipped with one as of yet.

The new Power Mac G4s will have blazing speed: The lowest-end model will be just under a gigahertz, while the high-end units will come in at 1.4 gigahertz, easily surpassing the "gigahertz barrier."

Other features on board the new Power Macs will include 266MHz DDR SDRAM, a 256K L2 cache and a 2MB L3 cache on the high-end, and upgraded FireWire connectivity, possibly IEEE 1394b. They will not ship with USB 2, however.

A month out, so you can't fault them really. But we're still waiting for this stuff over 8 months later.

    From ThinkSecret Jan 3, 2002:

Flat-panel iMac. It is time to let one of the most awaited new products out of the bag. The flat-panel iMac with 15-inch LCD screen is here. The question is, can you afford it? At right around $1800 retail, there will be many questions if this iMac is just another overpriced Cube. Its success will be based on specific features and if it grabs attention for other than it is fantastic looks (and fantastic looking it is, we are told). There will be more than one configuration of this model and based upon what IBM has been announcing lately, we are pretty sure the 750fx G3 processor will be at its core. Do not expect multiple colors.

Flat-panel iMac was a no-brainer as everyone expected it at MWNY 2001. The price is wrong as is the CPU. In all, there's nothing there that indicates they knew anything at all. 4 days out and I'd say they cocked that one up pretty bad. The other rumors they posted at that time were pretty good, though not especially earth-shattering and they did accurately dial back the PowerMac speculation.

Bottom line, the minor rumors seem to work out well, but the big ones miss more often than not. They miss for two reasons:

    1) "There's no way Apple can do that and stay in business" There were rumors of a G4 flat screen iMac at decent prices - everyone blew it off as wishful thinking. The cube went the same way. These are killed off by the people that don't completely think different about product design and marketing.

    2) "There's no way Apple can't do that and say in business" Pretty much every Powermac rumor of the last 2 to 2 1/2 years falls in here, PDAs, yadda yadda yadda. Faster PowerMacs in NY last year, faster PowerMacs in SF this year. These are promoted by the people that don't completely tune into the realities of running Apple.

Of course, we all do both of these to varying degrees.

[quote] From ThinkSecret on June 1.?

A former and present Apple CEO will vie for supreme media attention this coming Tuesday as John Sculley and Steve Jobs will both grab high-tech headlines.

In the case of Sculley, Think Secret has learned he will make a "major announcement" of a new company and product. While we usually try to bring you the details first, we have been asked not to divulge them, as doing so would put our source in jeopardy. Suffice to say, once we were told of Sculley's announcement, we agreed that it was a significant development. <hr></blockquote>

Here's a link covering John's big announcement. Why would ThinkSecret think this is bigger than the preview of Quicktime 6 or the announcement that the eMac is available for everyone? Hope they are just as wrong about the keynote. <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,101657,00.asp"; target="_blank">Sculley's Earth Shaker</a>

A most cogent response, johnsonwax. Think Secret's track record isn't as good as some commonly believe. Examining the aggregate, one realizes rumor sites may get some things right but at the wrong time - they're usually too optimistic. I'm not all that bullish on MWNY this year, but I'm expecting and hoping it won't be a total disappointment. Surely a 17" iMac isn't an item meriting full keynote devotion; Jobs must have something else for us. He must!

That definitely sounds like how I've been feeling; I bet it has something to do with being let down a few (Dozen) times by Apple already.

Beyond the rumor sites, way beyond...a very pessimistic rumor site...

Sounds like their source would do pretty crappy on Jeopardy? if they did ever wind up in it, judging from the quality of the rumor

I say we take Moki out and get him butt-wasted. After he's thoroughly drunk, he'll spill the beans like the little AI-bitch that he is.

C'mon Moki, PM me with the score and I'll post it like I got it from one of my friends in Cupertino who I get drunk. You can trust me.
