I expect Apple will upgrade the iPod. It currently links into iTunes, I'd like to see it link into other digital hub applications like iMovie and iPhoto. With a higher resolution colour screen and TV/projector output, it would be a neat way to carry movies and photos around and show them to others.

The iPod is almost surely going to be updated to 20G. As for a PDA, I doubt it.

I say, "If you need a PDA today then buy one today. If you only want one to have the newest trendy device, then you'll be waiting a while."

Well, my thoughts are this are...

    1) Ink is too complex a technology to add 'just for a laugh'. It might be for an Apple graphics tablet but why step on Wacoms toes?

    2) Addressbook. You're desperately trying to get your new version OS finished, and you divert resources onto a utility most people don't use. Why?

Both these things could point to a PDA or Tablet (seems logical to me).

I don't think the current iPod will do much more than become a general purpose storage device. If a new iPod comes out with controls you can input with, then it would make a great PDA.

If you mean EVER, then I say YES. If you mean soon, then I say NO.

Sure, they'll upgrade the iPod someday.

I think it is time for Apple to get on the Bluetooth bandwagon, and I think they will in a serious way.

How about Bluetooth on the iPod, with Bluetooth headphones and a Bluetooth remote the clips to your shirt (like all of the MiniDisc remotes but without the wires).

I don't think that they should change the look of the iPod though. I know lots of people want support for iPhoto, etc but I don't want the iPod interface complicated with a punch of additional ports. But a firewire to usb addon might be handy.

Also, from Apple's point of view why not release an iFrame that is used for photos? Then people have two devices that do their jobs REALLY well instead of one device that does both jobs only a little above average (the battery life on an iPod with a color screen would not be as good as it is now... and the screen size for the iPod cannot get much bigger without ruining the size and ultra portibility of it.)

But Bluetooth would be really cool. And a couple more breakout type games for the iPod as well.

In light of th expected 20gig upgrade to iPod, I could see a PDA attachment for it.

Basically it would be a seperate unit that clipped on and attached via Firewire. This could contain a fast(er) CPU, screen, and small amount of RAM.....20 gig (or 10 for that matter), would be enough for OSX lite AND mp3s.

I would totally love an Apple tablet similar to Microsoft's Mira.

iPod: I betcha there's a 20 Gigger waiting to see the light of Day.

"iPad": No way. At least not in the way we define PDA--ie nothing like Palm, PocketPC, etc.

iPod plugging into TV sets: Nope. External video support requires better processing for graphics than the iPod could hold, and MPEG/Quicktime processing wouldn't care for iPod either.

Ink: is a very useful technology that a lot of people use. And I wouldn't be surprised to see an iTablet that was worked on WITH Wacom (to not step on their toes). I know Apple and Wacom have a great relationship...

Address Book: Jaguar's use of it is aiming towards using it as part of the digital hub. A system-Global address book will keep data for Entourage (with an update), Palm Desktop (ditto), iChat, Mail, etc etc etc, making it your rolodex in your digital life.

Bluetooth: Coming on OS X, but I don't see it going very far. IE don't necessarily expect a Bluetooth-enabled ANYTHING from Apple. Remember that Apple had IrDA ports on Powerbooks until recently, on the Bondi iMac, etc and no one really used those...

PDA attachment to iPod: No chance. Add-ons didn't work for Sega (SegaCD), Nintendo (64DD), or Motorola (their PDA attachment to StarTAC). And it was a good idea when Apple first used it (Duo/DuoDock) but it died because market demand for it dropped. No, I don't see any add-on products...

Apple tablet: Too niche even for Apple. Many are predicting the failure of Mira, since it will cost too much. The use that most consumers (its target) would get from it is too limited to justify its price.

As hard drive sizes increase, so will the iPods capacity.

Remember, the iPod's hard drive is a PC Card, and you can swap your 5GB for a 10GB Toshiba. However, the 20GB version is several millimetres thicker than the 5GB and 10GB, so if that was used the iPod would be thicker. If a new, thinner version arrived, things would change of course.

Apple is hyping mp4, which unlike mp3 is managed by an industry group. MP3 is managed by Fraunhoffer, and Apple (and other companies) have little say in licencing issues.

The iPod is firmware upgradable, so an update to take AAC (Advanced Audio Codec, aka MP4 Audio) files is probable.

The iPod is pretty good already, so I would imagine any update would be minor.

The iPod is primarily a music player, and doubles as a hard disk. It can double as a portable hard drive without any changes to the hardware.

An iPod/PDA, iPod/Phone would in my opinion (much like the Treo) make the device bulkier, and the user interface bloated, distracting from its abilities as an portable music player/hard drive.

An Apple PDA would be interesting, but remember that iTunes came 9 months before its iPod baby.

Remember Music Player, the MP3 player which begat iTunes (and was around in Mac OS X public beta)? Well, I think that Address Book is like Music Player. Soon we will see a full organiser application, not just an address book. iOrganise, if you will.

iTunes doesn't just play music, it rips, mixes, burns and syncs.

iOrganise won't just read vCards, it will have a calander, note book, to-do list, all of which will sync to and from any PDA.

PDAs will also pop up as a drive (like CD/DVD-R/Ws and iPods), to which you can drag and drop apps/documents.

It seems strange that everyone has some kind of "intention" about what the iPod should or should not become. All this talk about making it available with a color screen, and then adding a full blown processor, and ram, and maybe a connection so we can connect it to a TV. If you guys really want something like that, go out and buy a laptop. People keep thinking that the iPod is this great invention that will solve all sorts of problems if it "just had..." Why would someone waste the time and resources to make that object when its already available with basic standards for accessories in a notebook? It works great for a portable hard drive, and even better and having most of your music with you, just leave it at that. Maybe one day Palm will combine a hard drive in a Palm so we can transfer files as a portable hard drive, listen to music, and still do all the great things Palm offers. But as far as making it into some kind of half ass attempt at a portable laptop, I just don't know. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

only add-om for the iPod I'd like is a way to connect to my camera to download the pictures to, otherwise it's great the way it is.

I agree with CFPC above...let the iPod be the iPod! NOT a PDA/TV/Video player...

I think we will see a 20GB iPod, and updated s/w to be able to play AAC/MP4 files.

credit card is ready...c'mon Apple, killer new G4/G5, ACD HD 23", and 20GB iPod

    1) Agreed, as per my post.

    2) Agreed, as per my post.

    3) I need money.

I reckon we will see an iOrganise, and then an iPDA (not their real names) 6-12 months later.

iPod will get a larger HD when they are available in the right size. I'd also like to see a USB port or a USB-Firewire adaptor so the iPod can hold photos, it would be great to carry the iPod with a camera, and dump photos onto the iPod. An entire vacation would have nearly unlimited photo potential. I think such an iPod would be in great demand.

    No PDA, no tablet.

My guess: the iPod will continue in it's current form, but with added storage and functionality.

I see an updated/color screen, so that when it serves as the portable storage for your digital lifestyle ( i.e. camera, dv, .... ) you'll be able to view/discard the jpg's you've saved. It's already got the ability to browse thru tons of mp3's, why can't that same method be used to browse your pictures. AND, they're not adding all that storage for just mp3's.

As far as PDA functionality, the same color screen will be used for vCards. You'll not only have contact information, but also the user picture you've got attached to it. I don't think the iPod works extremely well at being a PDA, but apparently, people like using it for their little black book.

Coming at MWNY??? If so, Apple's a lot farther ahead of the game than we all give them credit for.

    And the stand alone PDA???

    I wish.

Edit: ...and JYD took the words right out of my mouth.

I really doubt Apple will have a PDA anytime soon. Steve and Phil have both PUBLICLY said they are NOT working on a PDA and I believe them. It would be different if they didn't have the policy of not commenting on furure products, but since they do, and their statements go against that, I think we can take them as fact and write off a new PDA.
