I told you guys, I am not posting a word that ends with oi. Ever.

Anyway, click my link. It's a perfectly acceptable spelling.

I wasn't saying any of this to brag about how much I can argue with people about operating systems. I'm not a big geek, just a regular geek I posted this because I thought it was funny that he tried to get me to go over to Wintell computers. I didn't start the argument, nor did I finish it. I was talking to my friend (his roommate) and he overheard something about Macs and started bashing. He got his last word in (PC's rule!) and I went on with my life. I found it funny that he got so worked up about it and all I did was laugh while his face got more and more red. I'm sorry if I put a false impression out there about myself or the PeeCee guy.

    But I still love Macs

And no, I don't go to NMU.

No wonder CS sucks so much in general, if he really believes that...

I might get in trouble for saying this but here goes anyway:

Why do we even have to have this argument? I have used PC's all my life. When it came time to but my own laptop for work I purchased this TiPowerbook 15" and I love it. I think it was well worth the money and I love working on it.

I don't think I have a better computer then anyone, I didn't buy it because I think it will be faster then say a Dell laptop. I like OS X and I love the feel and the looks of my Power Book.

I do get tired of people asking my "Why do you use a mac" when I pull my laptop out of my bag. I really do think that is a stupid question. Why would you make a stranger explain why they choose a certain kind of computer?

I really don't understand why people must argue over which is better?

You can spin that back and forth till your blue in the face... My take ..WHO CARES..

I finally just started answering point blank with the truth:

"Because it's the best OS and platform for me to do my computer science dissertation research in advanced software engineering."

That usually stops them in their tracks.

Human beings are egotistical and xenophobic. We want to be right and we want to be agreed with. We've attached a lot of social connotations to brand affilliations, and not just with computers. Perhaps some of you have never lived far enough south to ever have winessed a Ford vs. Chevy argument. Coke vs. Pepsi is another popular one. I'm sure everyone here has felt the pressure to wear the right brand of shoes or jeans in grade school.

Commercialism has its claws so deep into our culture that most of us don't even realize that brand names and advertising have a profound effect on our perceptions and opinions of other people and of ourselves. As I see it, this issue is entirely separate from the issue of which brand produces the better product, and which brand has unfair or illegal business practices.

We tend to get the issues all mixed up when arguing about computers, and it usually leads to incoherent and unnecessarily emotional arguments. It solves nothing, of course, because we all still decide for ourselves. Our decisions may be based on actual research and experience, or we may just blindly follow advertising. We're all individualists who want everyone else to be like ourselves! Welcome to the human condition.

    fyi,

90% of personal computers may be running windows

    NOT ALL machines run windows

planet earth is still run on unix the last time i checked

nothing wrong in using a pc i use one myself as my primary

    machine (win2k)

there will always be bigots on both sides yourself included

the biggest advantage a mac has right now is the fact

its running on a freebsd core which most definitely is unix

Argue with him only if you find arguing fun. I've had my share over a couple of beers. Don't expect to win anything. Argued once 10 years ago with someone who didn't like the nice dumbed-down user interface of Macs, it wasn't professional enough and cryptic like the Windows version (was it even windows then? Dos stuff I think-yuk). Either way, today if I would have the same arguement it would be that Windows has caught up with the Mac on many fronts when it comes to the GUI, but now people are heading to the Mac because they are UNIX geeks who like the terminal. Go figure. The arguement can never be won, because these computers are so complex and you can keep changing the terms of the debate ad infinitum.

Best thing to do is to use your Mac to do something useful. Then stand back and say you did on a Mac.

no, the whole freakin state is backwards. need to get back to california...

austin might be better about this shit than CS, but it's still decades behind the rest of the country. man i hate this state...

if i hear another redneck tell me why trucks are "necessary" and better than cars in every way, i'll kill him.

"Why do you use a Mac?" is the equivalent to saying "Why do you drive a Ford instead of a Chevy or Honda?"

I use a PC. A Sony VIAO, in fact, which is the best PC I've ever had for editing and organizing photos (thanks to some of Sony's included software). My roomie says I'm just in denial over not having a Mac.

    I think he's right.

SUVs are included in the "truck" grouping. all the damn sorority chicks and soccer moms "need" them for various reasons...
