The Truth

A lot of you may remember that in the summer of 2000 (or thereabouts) I posted info on the G4+ or 7450 which came at MWSF 01. A friend of mine worked for Motorola, and knew most of the details for the upcoming G4. I gave some info, including 733 MHz and that the chips would be ready in late 2000. Soon enough we had them for MWSF 2001.

Since then I have not been able to speak with him, until earlier today. Turns out he has quit Motorola and is going back to school now. In the brief time that I was able to speak with him, he told me that his reasons for leaving Moto were that he didn't see any kind of a future for the company, describing it as pretty dismal. When I asked him about Motorola's future with Apple, he said that there probably wasn't one if any. Now, I know this isn't juicy tidbits, but I'm sure I can see what's up when I get to have a longer conversation with him. He has contacts around that and told me that he'd actually seen test prototypes of Macs around the labs.

A lot of stuff may be true, including Motorola seizing development of the G5 over a year ago. We'll wait and see.

I'll definitely keep all of you posted with further details.

Given how secretive Apple has been as of late, it wouldn't surprise me at all if your friend had absolutely no idea about anything 8/7500 related. Apple could be putting the choke-hold on leaks at moto as well.

Most likely true. Just very depressing to hear his feelings on Motorola. He said they didn't even have a bright future ANYWHERE.

    Motorola sucks ass.

But I feel sorry for the underlings who work there. Bad management has ruined Motorola, it's another example of how rich sack of sh!t executives can run a company into the ground, then walk away with a fat bonus while the people who do the REAL work (engineers, secretaries, janitors) get shafted over a barrel.

As far as I'm concerned, the anuses running Moto can go suck their own dicks.

I agree with JYD's comments in theory, but probably not in hostility.

I have also heard about issues with in Motorola. The company really is destroying itself, and that shows to developers who work with them. Moto. will be gone or severly reorganized within the next year ot so. Probably focusing on cell phones, and communications devices. There has been some talk about Apple and or IBM buying out the chip production and technology parts of the company, but more likely someone who is larger will do it. (AMD)

The other option is Moto, selling lisence to IBM to produce the G4/G5. Development has not stopped at moto. on new chips and speeds (G5,etc.) but it has taken a serious hit by layoffs. R& D is their absolute LAST priority.

And yes, the fatass execs. are still getting their bonuses, and raises, while like 7000 people are out of jobs, and hte company is still in a downward spiral. Pathetic.

My boss works for $1 per year!

... wasn't moto, like, in the Dilbert Index Top 5 for something 3 years in a row?

I get the impression that the secret rule @ moto went something like ...

"you'll be paid according to your golf score and the ability to nod approvingly ..."

The free market corrects itself. If moto spins out, then someone else will pick up their slack (and skilled workforce) just like it should.

Apple's future is not hinged on Moto surviving or making PowerPC chips (theres also this startup called IBM making PowerPCs and its cousins). Apple is not a huge market per se, but they are using a LOT of chips in a lot of products.

Dual CPUs double unit sales of CPUs instantly. Apple's market is definately not piddly, its just barely smaller than individual PeeCee companies out there who *also* have a choice in CPU makers.

Some companies survive and others make really boneheaded decisions and wipe out everything under them (Arthur Anderson singularly took out a LOT of companies the liberal media isn't reporting on going way back into the 90's).

Apple WILL survive somehow, Motorola be damned.

Apple has enough bank to buy out the AltiVec tech from a dying Moto and have a fab somewhere run off custom PowerPC chips just for them - sweet deal if there ever could be one. No more politics between design "partners" who have their own goals. Apple gets what it wants for reasonable prices and benefits from economies of scale by using G4s (or whatever) in as many products as they sell.

Bingo bango there simply is no problem that can't be fixed by simply applying principles of the free market economy. Now if Apple can only make a better motherboard than this weak ass 133 MHz SDRAM junk.

Riiiiight. You'd better hurry back to the Rush Limbaugh broadcast...you may be missing out on other valuable insights.

I love the idea that multi-billion dollar corporations are trying to promote a liberal agenda. Name one "liberal" with his/her own talkshow.

Ron Kuby, if you consider communists liberal (I'm liberal and I'm not against the basic principals of communism).

Anyways, I wonder if Apple will pull Moto out of the tubes if they start suffering. If they have the guts to buy Emagic...

    You never know.

The only reason there is no liberal talk show is because they are incapable of bringing forth a well reasoned argument. There is no way to base a talk show on: "You are insensitive."

Is there a politics forum around here? I'd like to take on the pocket-bolshevicks on this forum... On the other hand I already know the response to all of my arguments, "You are insensitive. You don't care about people."

Well...I guess that settles that, then. You've made me see the light with your "well reasoned argument."
