If you have a CD-R, archive to that. iPhoto will retain the library info it needs for the photos if you do it from within the app. Trim the active library until it gets to a decent speed for you.
6531 pictures; 10341 Mb. I should probably thin them out a bit, but it was too painfully slow to just delete stuff on my 500 TiBook. Things are a little better on my Dual G5
Still even on the Dual G5 I wouldn't exactly call iPhoto snappy. Apple really needs to do some optimization on this App.
I have about 10,000 pictures, 14 GB. It takes like 45 seconds to load my library on my G4 1.25 Powerbook with 1GB ram. I wish there were a better way to organize them. When I want to find a specific picture, I usually have to go through Finder because there are too many thumbnails and no info in iPhoto.

Dude, if you have 10k of pictures, consider ditching iPhoto.

iPhoto is beyond slow on a G4 Cube.

Of the Mac .. everything is on iPod now. Somewhere between 500 and 1000 photos.
