installed the panther yesterday, placed the cd into my iBook, re-boot as wanted, installing was running fine...

OOOPS!

meanwhile i realized, that i had installed the open firmware software from apple on my portable, in case it is stolen, you cannot start from cd.

but you can...-

no clean install, just actualizing my system.

final result is very good and running ...- but, how does a password protection makes sense without password...?!

bug? user failure? feature (user recog by telepathy)?

Did you at any time install or remove RAM?

well, when i bought the iBook i placed another 512Mb

someone in another forum told me, it worked because i typed my admin pw on a "system level" - therefore you can restart from cd without giving the firmware pw...

no idea, but as described - it worked....

    conclusio:

    be careful with passwords

It's just that altering the RAM amount disables the password, but it sounds reasonable that it worked because you typed your password before rebooting.
