Where's the equality?-The Glass Cellar

Die, die, die

Nice little report that will come out this week and yet again we will watch the national news say nothing about the inequality within these job areas. There will be no scolding stories of women who sought to enter these fields and were put down and told to go away. There will be no Newsweek investigations with a disapproving tone.

Why you may ask? Because women don't want these jobs. These are the jobs where 92% of the workplace fatalities are men. It seems that while women complain they are not 50% of CEO's they don't mind not being 50% of truck drivers, day laborers, coal miners, electricians, etc. Of course if men work more hours, or make more money from these jobs that is just proof of sexism too.

Why do you think NOW tolerates such injustice?

Is there an argument somewhere in those paragraphs?

No Grove, this post is purely meant to be an experience. Please enjoy being in the now and moment in which men die while women complain about getting paid less to not die.

I'm not sure I understand what your point is...women should be forced to take an equal share of dangerous jobs? Women should generally be paid less than men because they are less likely to take jobs in high-risk environments?

If you look at the stats, a greater percentage (5.03%) of the Hispanic / Latino workforce suffered fatalaties than White workers (3.94%). Does this mean that Whites should be forced to take more dangerous jobs to even things out? Or maybe White workers - who obviously go for safer jobs than Hispanic or Latino workers - should just be paid less?

    How a Trumptman thread begins:

    1) www.google.com

    2) search for: +"short end of stick" +man

    3) rinse and repeat

And yet they have fought to be allowed to do other high-risk jobs such as police officers, firefighters and soldiers.

    Strange.

Are women complaining about being paid less in these dangerous jobs?

You should probably think before you post.

    Strange.

Of course they do. Those jobs are government oriented and have loads of protections. Women will gladly take jobs when they have certain protections. However that still doesn't explain why they are turning men away from these jobs while having to heavily recruit women to meet enrollment figures of say women being 25% of the force. Likewise I never claimed any of these jobs were 100% men, nor that 100% of the deaths were men. It is more like 97% and 92% respectively.

You are correct that Latinos died disproportionately on the job. White and blacks both died slightly less than the percentage they represented. The interesting difference would be to see what it would be attributed to. In the gender issue it is of course attributed to men. Do you think this is caused by racial oppression?

So should whites (and blacks) take their fair share of the more dangerous jobs?

I would think it would depend. Are the differences large enough to micromanage? Are they a one year difference or a trend? Are they related to one particular industry or perhaps language issues?

From what I saw the differences between statistical perfection and the reality were something like 2%. I don't think society would see fit to attempt to micromanage this, however the opinions of others might be different.

However the disparity between genders is 92%-8% for men and women respectively. That to me is worth investigating.

We should all be thankful that the barriers to employment, for oppressed white males, are basically non-existant in those industries!

This is much ado about nothing. Women don't often choose these kinds of dangerous jobs. Ergo, the vast majority working these dangerous jobs are men. With the vast majority of workers being men, the vast majority of deaths would coincide.

What exactly do you propose to do here? Force X% of women to take these dangerous jobs?

I agree with a lot of what you have to say when it comes to divorce, father's rights, et cetera. However, you are just reaching here.

Say exactly what you want to do about this difference in death rates or don't bother whining about it.

I reckon that there is a pretty simple explanation for the disparities (both the large and small). A job may be undesirable for a number of reasons. It may be low paying or low status. It may be physically demanding menial work or it may be dangerous. All too often, it may be all of these things. People take undesirable jobs when they have limited employment options. Men are less risk averse than women, and are more likely to choose physically demanding or dangerous work over low pay or low status work. Whether this is due to cultural or innate factors is probably fodder for another thread.

Maybe women would rather not work in construction, farming or mining.

The lowest accident rates are in retail, services and finance... where strength is virtually a non-issue.

I wonder what the racial breakdown is of those that served in Iraq and have died?

Gee... another pointless thread. Using your data analysis skills... you could write a book to compete with Ann Coulter's.
