- Layered windows. Click on one window and bring all belonging to the same app to the foreground. Bonus points for allowing to opt to layer application windows on a per-app per-session basis.
I only trust the themes made by the self proclaimed (and probably rightfully so) OS X master Brad.
I also would like tabs for window along the bottom of the screen but I think the dock would get in the way.
I know it's a feature of OS X to share the processor but I definitely liked in OS 9 that I knew I was giving all the processing power to the front most app without using the 'nice' command. But it is worth it to not have programs not redraw or update in the background when your doing work.
Almost everything people said was a good idea, I can't say I can think of too many as it has been 2-3 years since I've used 9 besides at work when all I did was photoshop last year...but got them to use X this summer.

Why do you need to "trust" someone when it comes themes? Do you mean because they could kill aqua? I've only had that happen once a year ago and after running aquafix in single-user mode it was fine. That was installed, by the way, without Duality or ThemeChanger. Use either of those now and your fine.
If you mean you don't trust anyone elses style, your close-minded.
does anyone recall a theme in the works, where the window widgets were actual SHAPES (circle, rectangle, and triangle)?
i loved that idea, but i never found the theme after the first screenshots. in fact, it was so brilliant, i didn't understand why apple didn't rip it off, as it gave you an idea, either in the colored or graphite themes, of which widget did what before even scrubbing over them.
does anyone else know the theme to which i refer? if so, have you seen it anywhere lately?
there was also a theme site called "istudio," but i have yet to find it again, even via google searching. if anyone has it bookmarked, i'd like to find it again. they repeated many of the themes already out there, but they had a few unique exclusives, too.

My old 10.0 theme "Iridium" was exactly that.
Here's an old old OLD screenshot from when I started it. I can't find any newer ones and, frankly, don't feel like updating it for Panther just to take a new screenshot.

close, but not quite. the theme i am thinkin gof used a red orb for the close widget, an amber/gold down triangle for the minimize widget, and a green square for the "zoom to fit" widget. they looked almost like jewelesque versions of the current aqua blobs.
One feature I guess I'd like: a smarter finder with regards to the Library folder. In Classic Mac OS, dragging, say, a font into the System Folder would present you with a dialog saying something like, "Fonts belong in the Fonts folder. Would you like this file put there?" I think it would really come in handy, just as an added convenience, to be able to drag a font or prefspanel or something else to my Library and have it automatically move things around. Calendars, ColorSync profiles, FontCollections, Fonts, Keyboard Layouts, Keychains, PreferencePanes, Printers, and Screen Savers are the ones that come to mind.
Folder Actions, anyone? These little buddies are finally working w/ closed folders as well (wasn't the case in earlier MacOS versions). It wouldn't be as fast as a "real" implementation of that feature, but a folder action script attached to the Library folder could do the job.
If there's enough interest (mail me), I'll write that script (perhaps as a shareware, free for Apple Insider members or something )
The Put Away command and Tabbed Windows. The latter isn't that important, but I bet I could access the contents of a tabbed window faster than I can currently get to something via a folder[1} in the dock right now.
Especially on my older iBook
[1]by in a folder in the dock I mean accessing the item through the contextual menu that pops up when you click hold on a folder in the dock.

No, but to my knowledge theme are often a cause of instability and problems.

Are you mad, the fact that I can click and you have to click and hold (I was careful to make sure you said that instead of control click) makes me the fastest.
Speaking of folder actions, I'm somewhat confused about them. What do they do? How can I use them? I've never done AppleScript before so I'm completely new at that. Are there pre-made scripts I can download and implement, maybe modify slightly to suit my own needs? I did a search but I couldn't really find anything about folder actions.
Oh and I think I'm going to rename my labels to Essential, Hot, In Progress, Cool, Personal, Project 1 and Project 2 . Too bad you can't change the colors, I'd SO set them back to the old System 7 colors if I could. As it is I have to settle with orange being Hot and red being Essential
Actually, though, the only time I really use labels is when I have a cluttered application folder. Most of my applications are a single self-contained file, but some require extra folders with scripts, support files, etc. So I use the red label to quickly identify the application. I never really use the other colors.

You can make a bootable OSX CD with DiskUtility now and burn it, if that's what you want ...
What I like most from OS9 is a window memory. I want the size and position of every window remembered together with the icon view and their positions.
It's a bit better with Panther now, but I hate it to switch and/or resize the view for each window again
Apart from that, I'm more happy than ever with Panther
- Fast bootup time. Fast UI. Fast everything.
- less jellybeans, more solid UI

Use option-click.

No version of Mac OS Classic has booted faster than Panther for me.
What do you still want back from OS 9?
My audio software without needing to upgrade.
Yeah, I know it's a pipe dream...

RAM disks. I'd love to see a Dual 2 GHZ booting off of 8 GB of RAM.
There are RAM disks in OS X. I use an applescript that creates them, more at Mac OS X Hints

Thought Kaleidoscope was just a themer? There are tons of themes for OS X.
