Right now I'm missing the SoCal sun and warmth....been rainy and brisk here for a week.
We were fortunate enough to get 80+ degree weather into late October, so I'm not too pissed about the weather change. It's time for on-and-off rain showers into January now.
If so, we have a keg race against your Princeton equivalents next week. EE's will win, because you can't spell beer without "ee." More seriously, we'll win because we have about 10 guys with no shame.
Lastly, I think you guys are getting a little worked up about the number one state school. I mean, there's whole realm of private schools out there, and one of them *cough* consistently takes the overall first place honors.

It's because of Hoagie Haven.
I'm a CivE minor and architecture major as of now.
You probably will win, our tiny asian engineers can't hold alcohol all that well

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time UVA's newspaper has felt it
neccessary to attack Berkeley. Of course, this also discounts the fact
that most of the comparisons claimed in the article are partily
incorrect or altogether false. Anyone who thinks we receive 36% of our
funding from the state is insane; however, we do have a current budget
deficit of 35% for the next two fiscal years due to the massive cuts to
education and specifical the university of california as a system this
year (based on current student fee proposals). Additionally, we let in
so few out-of-state students into Cal because this is a STATE school and
we are required by law to have no more than 10% of the student body be
comprised of out-of-state AND international students. This leads to a
floating cap on the admissions percentage of out-of-state students each
year. We could, I suppose, increase this percentage in order to receive
more revenue per student as UVA has done, (non California residents pay
an average of $10k more per year) and it is possible that we might due
this in the future to met our budget requirement. However, I would note
that this is a decision for the UC Regents and not only that Berkeley
can custom tailor as it see fit.
I also think that UVA has a sad history of taking the rankings just a
little too seriously. Most serious research universities (a list which
include both UVA and Berkeley) don't put much emphasis on the US News
rankings anyways because the are so biased towards alumni giving and the
size of an endowment. For example, I you were comparing graduate
history programs, Harvard would win every time under the US News system
(by about 20 places) because they give a full fellowship to every
doctoral student. However, a check of the latest National Research
Council rankings (a peer-based ranking system that does not take
monetary resources into account) finds that the Berkeley history
department scores as #2 in the nations behind Yale and two places in
front of #4 Hardvard. Why compare graduate program rankings? Because
they are much more indicative of the academic quality of the faculty who
teach the classes and lead the intellectual development of the student
body (I might also add that quality grad programs usually means pretty
smart TAs as well). I can tell you that as a graduate student I am much
more concerned about the reputation of my program and my faculty mentor
than how much money I receive or that the university receives from the
state (although free money, of course, is always appreaciated) because
the universities that you attend follow you throughout your academic
career and may or may not open doors to you in academia.
Berkeley is one of the those few names that is recognized around the
world, both inside and outside the academic community (rather like
Oxford, Yale, Universidad Nacional Autonomo de Mexico, and Universidad
Complutense, Madrid to name a few). I don't think we got that
reputation by accident. Nad (CAA President) and I are working on our
own extended responses to echo Ben's excellent response to this attack
piece, but don't ever let anyone tell you that the University of
California at Berkeley isn't one of the best universities in the world.
