When would a Geforce4 Go chip be utilized in the PowerBook. What about ATA-100? DDR SDRAM? Could such an upgrade come along side a PowerMac update? Thanks for the input.

Geforce 4 would be nice, but no laptop has ATA 100
It would be a complete waste of time as the standard 4200RPM drive could never saturate it. We are just beggining to see 5400RPM drives and even thay could never come close

In theory the current 7200rpm drives barely saturate the ATA-66 bus. Unless you are pushing a large amount of video at once it will never fully saturate it.
The chances are decent but I just doubt a new card standard since they just upgraded the card. I would pee my pants if they put it out with a Gforce 4 and 1ghz CPU, maybe big surprise and give it superdrive
Can anyone really see the difference in the TiBook 667 vs the 800? I did my own benchmarks at an apple store one, on how long it took to open photoshop, and they were simultaneous almost every time, with the 667 even beating the 800 a couple of times. Is the couple extra Mhz worth the huge price upgrade?

This is NOT a good benchmark to compare two computers that are as similar as the two current PowerBook G4's.
When you are starting Photoshop, a LOT and I mean a LOT of the launch time has to do with how fast the hard drive is, and how fast the memory/bus is. In this case, they both have the same speed drives, memory, and bus. Don't go on about how the L3 should help, it doesn't when you are dealing with the MB required to get Photoshop up and running. Opening Photoshop is all about loading and initializing data from the hard drive and dumping it into the RAM, which isn't very processor intensive.
isnt this purchasing advice? Genius bar? moderators?
anyways... actual content... WHAT do you NEED the computer for... if its just for taking notes, you should wait until you absolutly NEED it... who knows what could happen from now until september... the special event for the power Macs... Jaguar release... Seybold... Apple expo Paris.... you would KICK yourself if you got a TiBook and have it updated within 3 months... you should either buy as soon as it is availale or buy used.... that is my opinion anyway...
I'm with PEte, typo and all, FWIW, - I don't have any special knowlege, so if anybody does, please feel free to jump in - but I've got an original 500Mhz TiBook, it's been dropped, dinged, dented and generally much abused over the past year+, but I absolutely love the thing, despite it's nasty crotch roasting tendecies.
I doubt Apple's due for any serious updating to the TiBook for prolly another 4 or 5 months, and at 800Schmegahurts, huge L3 cache, much better screen and less testicle roasting ... the latest revision is a whole new machine - it's sorta like TiBook 10.1 over a bunch of 10.0.4's ...
Get the lastest or don't bother. Especially considering Quartz extreme.
How come the shiping time from the Apple online store is 7 days for the TiBook, while it's only 1-3 days for the PowerMac? Considering the August 12-13ish date is supposedly for PowerMacs, I can't imagine they're running out of PowerBooks.
Sorry, but the following is off topic:
-How long after in mid-August intro of the new PMacs will they actually ship?
-How does a TiBook 800 compair speedwise with a Dual GHz PowerMac?
Well I'd like to thank everyone. Unless somehow I obtain an extra $500 between now and when school starts I will avhe to choose a 667MHz, 30GB, with extra ram bought from somewhere else. Unless they change the specs this will be my choise probably. Unless people want to donate me some money, if everyone just gives me $20... ...oh you dont want to, ok then well thanks anyways. haha thanks everyone for the help
If anyone wants to buy a handheld electromagnetic pulse emitter I'm making them and be glad to sell you one assuming I don't get in trouble for you destroying things with it. *(for those of you who do not know wat that is, think of a neutron bomb for electronics...also this is small enough to fit in your pocket and goes 2-24in)*
considering this thread is covering both pocked sized emp pulse emitters as well as what and when the new PB's will be coming out, i think it could probably stick around in future hardware.
besides, you wouldn't have half the crackpot ideas if this were in the Genius Bar.
This sounds about right to me as well. iBooks and TiBooks have been on the Apple promo recently and Apple's been giving special pricing on large TiBook orders ($2499 for the 800MHz).
They're trying almost as hard to move the TiBooks as the Powermacs. The promos used to be a good indicator of what is about to be revved. I don't know if that's changed, or if there's going to be something close to a full product sweep in the next month.
If you've seen Ocean's Eleven (the new one, not the original), there's an EMP bomb that they use to disable all the power in Las Vegas for about a minute, giving them time to rob a casino.
On the topic, I also want a new laptop, and I can wait about a month to get one. My budget is a little lower, so a somewhat lucky deal on a used 667 DVI is about the best I can do (I can probably afford to spend about $2000 for it, not including upgrades). But I'm looking more at the earlier generations of TiBooks because the lower resolution doesn't bother me too much (I'd love the higher resolution but I've used my dad's 550 and it's still nice), I don't need huge amounts of VRAM as I'm not a hardcore gamer, I would like a G4 because so many things run better on it, and I really like large screens (like the 14" TFT on my Wallstreet) even if they have lower resolution than they could.
Is there a great speed difference between the 550 and old 667? Enough to justify a $200-$300 price increase?
I don't know if that's changed, or if there's going to be something close to a full product sweep in the next month.

Well I don't know if it's changed, but I think Apple used to do full product sweeps more often than it does now. I remember reading an old archived Atari BBS that had some general computer related news on it, including Apple's simultaneous introduction of the PowerBooks (100, 140 and 170), Quadras (700 and 900), and Classic II. These are all their 1991 releases, all released in October of '91.
Of course, back then, products ran for longer than they do now, and instead of updating a single computer, they just released a new one with a new name without dropping the old one. So introducing everything for one year (six new computers) at one event wasn't a huge deal.
It's totally different now. If there are any simultaneous changes in the product line, one is always fairly small and meant not to compete with the other. So we may get updated PowerBooks at the same time the PowerMac is updated, but since the PowerMac update will be big, the PowerBook update will be very minor.
Comments
SJ, I'm ready to buy a new Powerbook as soon as:
- it has built-in Bluetooth
- it has built-in Superdrive
- Apple UK offer Consumer Credit
I'm not that bothered by slot loading drives or 1" thickness, the Powerbook G3 FW case is fine.
Love
James

Oh ok, didn't know that about ATA100.
That is a great way to get dead in a hurry. I recommend a shotgun if you want to pack heat in bear country.
