    Christmas 1993 - Present

It's a PC, so maybe it doesn't count. Started with an AMD 486DX 40MHz, 4MB RAM, 120MB HDD, and a 19200 baud modem. That bad boy ran DOS 6.2 and Win 3.1. Since then it's had 8 new processors, 5 new motherboards, 9 new HDDs, 8 new RAM configurations, 7 video cards, 3 sound cards, 2 new modems, 5 optical drives, 3 network cards, 4 monitors, 5 mice, 3 keyboards, 3 sets of speakers, 3 power supplies, 1 new case, and 5 new OS's. It's rock solid. It will continue to grow with me until the day I die.

1999 : G4 Yikes! 400 MHz - the first batch before the 350 MHz (sold)

So, how long have you had the computer you are using now?

I know guys who say they "need" the newest, fastest computer as soon as it comes out. One friend of mine, a freelance graphic designer who does a lot of work with digital video, says he won't stop buying computers until he finds one that can do everything he wants the exact second he hits the key or pushes the mouse to get it done.

I for one think it's foolish to fork over huge wads of cash for new computers every couple of months. You will always be able to argue that the newest computer available would be better for your needs than your current computer. The truth is, rarely are changes in performance that noticeable between computers that are just a few months apart.

My last "main computer" was a 500MHz G3 PowerBook Pismo purchased in August of 2000 and used as my main computer until November 2003 (this month). My wife now uses the Pismo as her main computer.

My current main computer is a Dual 1.25GHz PowerMac G4 ... and I don't plan on replacing it until sometime in 2006 unless hardware/software requirements for my work change considerably before then.

I'm gonna try to bite the bullet, actually. I'm putting my iBook 14" 600 MHz up for sale (which I've had since August of 2002 - anybody interested?), and am looking into buying a new iBook G4 1GHz.

    iMac 266 bought April/May? 1999.

Gave it a new lease of life earlier this year thanks to an OS X upgrade. I bought a reduced in price version 10.1, mainly as an experiment and to try OS X, the iMac was exhibiting all the symptoms of the video board problem, so I thought what the hell, if its dying anyway let it die in style and what do you know?, it is apparently cured! Eleven months of video-board-problem-free computing, although you know by my saying this it will now be dead before Christmas!

I've had a ton of Apples and Macs, never sold a single one. I'll save you all from the list and just say my current machine(s). I'm typing this on a G4 cube that is approaching 3 years old in about a month. I also use, however less frequently, a G4 revision A sawtooth about two and a half years old, and a 6400 that is about 6 and a half years old.

I am a big fan of the 6400. Sure it is unupgradeable for the most part, but it is a reasonably fast machine under OS 8.6 even today.

    A 6300 to 6400 G3 upgrade, but in a slightly round-about manner;

    • 1996: Performa 6300. 100MHz 603e, 8MB RAM (tripled for £45, then doubled months later for £30  )

    • 1998: Customised the 6300 to take a 6400 motherboard, but took it out due to lack of RAM.

    • 1998: a custom built PC: K6/2 333 clocked to 400 with no problems (still runs at this frequency today), nVidia TNT, 64MB RAM.

    • 1999: got some RAM for the 6400. As it was in a 6300 case, no PCI slots. TV tuner/video in and comms slot ethernet still fit.

    • 2000: PC upgraded to Duron 650 (clocked at 800)

    • 2001: New graphics card for the PC: Radeon All-In-Wonder.

    • 2002: Acquired a proper 6400 case for £40 from an eBayer, added a G3/400, Voodoo 3 and a USB card. By now, it was maxed out to 136MB RAM. The original 6300 is returned to a usuable state, with the addition of some spare parts and an PDS network card (that doesn't work at all on 10/100 networks )

    • 2003: PowerBook G4, 12": 60GB hard drive, 640MB RAM (etc). PC upgraded to Duron 1300 for less than £30.

I've had my current Cube since November 2000, when I bought it new. It's still a great machine, still a good performer, and I still tend to think of it as the "new computer". I think its looks have something to do with that.

I think it's good for another couple of years as a desktop, and then I might turn it into an iTunes-based music jukebox or a server or something. The way it's built I can see it lasting for a long time.

    Primary computers:

IIcx sometime in the early-mid 90s

Quadra 610 a year or two later

    PowerMac 7100 in 1997

    PowerMac 8100 in late 2001

    PowerBook G3/233 in April 2002

    PowerMac G4/500x2 in September 2002

    iBook G3/800 in December 2002

    eMac G4/1GHz in September 2003

I think my next will be a used PowerMac G5 sometime in 2005. Given my recent track record, though, it'll actually be sometime in 2004 (even if that's a dumb move).

EDIT: I forgot all about my old 'n sh*tties! The ones that aren't my primary computer. Here's what I've owned in semi-chronological order.

SE FDHD w/ 25 MHz accelerator (it was fun watching windows zip open on an old compact Mac)

    LC III+

    PowerBook 3400c/180

    PowerBook 1400c/117

PowerBook 520c (still own, but trying to sell)

PowerBook 1400cs/117 (still own this one too)

333 Blueberry iMac since July of 1999. My first and only Mac. As many have said before, best investment ever. I haven't had one problem with this machine in the four years I have had it. When I have the flow and the need to replace it, you can bet nothing but another quality Apple product will replace it.
