Wouldn't the problem be more the ability of the hinges on the arm to bear the weight without sagging, especially over the life-time of the machine?

If the weight of the base were a problem, which I'm sure it isn't, they could probably put some lovely cheap lead/depleted uranium/etc in it anyway...

edit: wow, that was a flurry of responses, and I lose

THAT'S NICE. I'M SURE APPLE WON'T INTRODUCE A PRODUCT THAT HAS AN ARM THAT DOESN'T WORK THOUGH. SERIOUSLY.

Gee, isn't it lucky I can speak all-caps? I would have had no idea what you were saying

My editing speed isn't what it used to be.

I think it's safe to say that the arm was engineered to carry weight higher then the 15 and 17 inch displays.

(Oops my 17" iMac display just fell down!)

An ad for Tekserve in todays New York Times lists a dual 1.8GHz G5 "announced today."

    Dual 2.0 $2,999 / dual 1.8 $2,499 / 1.8 $2,099 / 1.6 $1,799

Resellers are notorious for knowing nothing, and "announcing" products that where just rumors.

See the DDR Power Mac G4, many resellers "announced" it in early 2002. Great job guys.

The price points are exactly what Think Secret posted late last night.

    Well, it's already here!

Yeah, this time I believe it. Nice to see the dual 2.0 still at the same price point. Wouldn't want anyone who *just* received theirs to flip their lids.

They didn't even bother giving it a 1.33GHz processor like the 17" Powerbook got.
  • Reply 116 of 128
No single 1.8 it seems; and the 20" iMac is only different from the 17" in screen size...

The most exciting thing for me is that it means that they've recalculated the prices to reflect the new-improved AUD. Excitement...

I can't find the resolution on the 20", I hope it is the same as the Cinema display.

Well I for one think that the iMac has now hit the ultimate in terms of design specifications. I am glad that we can have a 160Gb hard drive even if it is too expensive. On e of the problems I have is that if I load my CD's into iTunes there isn't enough room to edit my videos. There are 5 in my family and we all have our own user login so space is very tight on my 17" iMac (60Gb only).

I am disappointed that they didn't bump the speed, but I guess that will happen after the Christmas rush to give January sales a boost.

    It's 1680x1050. The CD is 1680x1080.

Yeah, 20" iMac has 1680x1050 resolution...same as 20" Cinema Display.

What's with the silly surfer scene? Wouldn't a winter/holiday one be a tad more sensible?

(notice I didn't say "Christmas", heaven forbid...)

The new iMac looks great. But I would like to see them keep all iMac below $2000. Although the machine is attractive, I think people in the iMac's market are going to hesitate to spend that much.
