New PowerMac Specs

Since no one really knows what we are getting in august (or whenever) how bout everyone puts specs that they think will happen...within reason. But as you do so remember that Apple is not a magical, but with powerful prosumer machine like the 17" iMac, Apple can now afford to bring its professional machines backup to higher prices.

I wonder why my hopes and wants would vary from what's expected? Hmm Apple, are you doing your job? Providing the Newest, most Innovative and Powerful computing solutions?

*Maybe* TWO AGP 8X slots.. That would really put Apple ahead.

Please a 2 button wheel mouse.

Revised G4's or :crosses fingers: G5's, at 1.2single, 1.4 single OR dual, and 1.6 single or dual.

Better pricing(HAH!)

Well, I suppose I will not post my realistic ideas. But seriously, I know it will not happen, but 2 AGP8X slots would REALLY put Apple ahead of the game, and make me feel like my purchase is that much more worth it. So, ya, that is it, I am tired, and I am going to bed soon.

You guys are whimps.

I have an old MacMall catalog c. 1995.

Lets look at some of the prices:

Power Mac 7500/100 (desktop style): $2699 - no modem,500 meg HD, 16 meg. RAM, 3 full length PCI slots.

Power Mac 8500/120: $3999 (mini-tower) - no modem, S-Video in/out, 1 gig. HD, 16 meg. RAM, 3 full length PCI slots. 3 front drive bays.

Power Mac 9500/120: $4599 (tower) - no modem, 16 meg. RAM, 1 gig. HD, 6 PCI slots. 3 front drive bays.

32 meg. RAM $1149.

You can today get a dual 1 GHz G4 with 4 PCI, Gigabit ethernet, built in modem, up to 1.5 gig RAM, Superdrive for $3499 ($2999 w/display purchase promo). Plus you get really fast I/O with FireWire and USB. Industry standards so your devices work with macs and PeeCees (many times without d/l or installing drivers).

If you cant afford to outright purchase any new G4, you are either a teenager or have piss poor credit. There's a concept called financing. Its incredible, but you can actually buy things on "credit" where you make small payments over time.

Stop whining about prices! You "new" Mac people have no clue how cheap comparitively powerful Macs are to what Apple used to sell (or even many PeeCees, almost none have Gigabit ethernet BUILT IN - read a real DELL catalog, prices are strikingly similar when configured to match a default Mac).

"Real Stuff" coming next year. This will be the Inverse Yikes, as others have described.

I expect MASSIVE price increases across the entire Powermac lineup. The economy is still mucky, Apple's profits are in jeopardy, and at MWNY Apple's new motto was, "if it is or could be free, then CHARGE for it!". Everything at MWNY pointed towards Apple squeezing profits from every corner they've cut in the past, so I expect that the new Powermacs will have gargantuan price increases to cushion Apple's profits for the next quarter and keep the bottom line in the black.

Here's what I expect, with prices:

G4 CPUs

$1799: 1.0 GHz G4.

$2499: 1.2 GHz

$3299: Dual 1.333 GHz

New muthaboard, with the following:

133 MHz frontisde bus.

X-Serve DDR memory controller, supporting 266 MHz PC2100 RAM.

AGP pro.

New case design with Batman-tech cooling, and TWO (2) expandable optical drive bays!

Cooling will be total overkill for G4 CPUs....speculation will ensue at a fevered pitch and continue until the NEXT Powermac revision, which will actually be worth our time.

Here is what I'm HOPING to see:

$1499: 1.0 GHz G4.

133 MHz FSB, PC 133 RAM

Current motherboard.

New case design, like the one from the French site, with two optical drive bays.

$1999: Dual 1.2 GHz G4

$2699: Dual 1.4 GHz G4

$3199: Dual 1.6 GHz G4

All of the dual CPU Powermacs have the following specs:

Totally new Motherboard and case with Batman-tech turbine cooling system and TWO (2) optical drive bays.

333 MHz frontside bus (Rapid IO?)

PC 2700 RAM

AGP pro

Firewire2

USB2

Of course this second set of predictions is ludicrous, it would never happen, but it's nice to dream sometimes. The low end tower is aimed at those who want a tower but can only pay "consumer" prices. It's essentially an old tech tower: new case, but old mobo and old internals. But for the price, it's a good buy and Apple can maintain good margins on it because the parts are all so old....also, it is a good way for Apple to get business from people who may have previously been planning on buying upgrade CPU cards. At $1499, it's a better deal than an upgrade card for an older Sawtooth tower, so Apple will get extra sales they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

All of the dual CPU Powermacs have entirely new mobos and internals. They are the "G5 ready" towers, with cooling and mobos ready for G5s. These new mobos will render bandwidth bottlenecks a thing of the past, and Altivec will finally be able to spread its wings! Also, the dual CPUs will fly with OS X. Notice that by having a low-end GHz Powermac with an older revision mobo, Apple can price the low end dual CPU tower at $2K. This keeps their margins phat on the dual CPU G4s, while having a low priced tower as an alternative.

Of course, these Dual CPU towers are using G4s fabbed on a 130 nm process, that is how they are clocked to 1.6 GHz. Reality check shows high traces of RDF ionization patterns.
