When I saw the photos I thought aloud, why the new mobo, why the new layout? Surely there?s a reason, it?s not just a whim, that the PM?s parts are rearranged within.

Then I saw the reason that got me to think? it?s ?cause of the weight, the seven-pound heatsink. Putting it low makes the case more stable, although I don?t know how they?d route the cables.

So why do they need such a big chunk of steel? Is it ?cause our G5 dreams are real? Will the current G4 justify the expense, to change all boards from this day hence?

Maybe, as someone has suggested, the case is a mule, just to be tested. Or they may keep it for one revision, until it?s replaced by a brand new creation.

But now it?s time for bed, where I?ll let gigahertz visions dance in my head.

I like zaz's guess, that the middle thingy may be the only bit of real stuff, providing that this whole thing wasn't cooked up by a bored industrial design student.

I really envision the next computer being metallic, rectangular with rounded corners, and fast as a scalded-ass ape. This one says YIKES to me too.

    and XYPE:

don't go talking about your first computer havng 2Mb of memory and a 20Mb hard drive.....some of use grew up on Atari's and Commodores sporting 64k of on-board memory! We were lucky since the sinclair people had two ants and a beetle in lieu of RAM. Hard drives? In your dreams.

Uh, OK, if we're done shouting, the PCI slots do rather look to be on the top:

Edit: I just notice one thinh that's bugging me, nothing's screwed in, it looks like the motherboard is missing all the screws that attach it to the standoffs, the Cards aren't screwed in either on the back of the case either (though that's not critical), what is holding it in place when the door is closed?

true I see no screws on the logic board. I bet they removed them to look at the underside of the board. They did say that the fan along side the logic board was used to cool the three layers that made up that side of the case. How would you know about that without taking out the logic board.

My sources say that those aren't coming until MWSF 2003.

Okay, I have a couple of questions.

Why is the case fan mounted on the side door? Won't it make more sense if the case fan was placed near the back (and facing the opposite way) so that air flow would go from front to back? Why are the case fan power cables built into the side door?

In the back of the picture you can see two (maybe three) IDE cables. One simply looks unplugged while the other appears to be neatly tie-wrapped together but no where near where it should be.

    Thanks

OK, FWIW, here's my take on these awful, awful pictures.

    1.) They're real. (Unfortunately.)

It seems like whenever photos like this get leaked, there are some people who analyze them to DEATH and start to see flaws that aren't there.

These people are simply looking too hard.

Remember when the QuickSilver photos were leaked, and everyone was all "Fake! Fake! Fake!"?

And then they turned out to be right? (Except in the leaked photos, the drive bay doors were clear.)

In the current batch of leaked photos, sure, I too see the pixellated edges on the machine and the blurred portion above the bottom handle, but I think these reflect the source's desire not to reveal any environmental clues that would give him up.

Plus, in the drive bay area, you can see the reflection of another PowerMac. It too appears to be wrapped in plastic. The bottom just behind the handle seems to show this.

Also, the Apple logo in the reflection is blurry like it's behind plastic, too, just like the main unit's Apple logo is.

This is a real Apple PowerMac enclosure, I'm afraid.

The only question is, is it the final production unit? Or is it just a prototype enclosure that won't actually be used?

God I hope it won't, because it looks ugly and awkward.

    2. I thought Apple built and circulated prototype machines using beige box enclosures so as not to reveal the industrial design?

But I guess they need to beta test the enclosures (heat management, are the drives conventient to use, etc.)

    Any thoughts?

    3. I analyzed the current leaked shots of the motherboard and they match the "red eBay motherboard" very closely.

Rotate these images as necessary and they line up part for part.

    Everything adds up!

When that red motherboard leaked, everyone was marvelling at the so-called "mystery port" between the FireWire ports and the Ethernet jack.

I tried to break it to everyone that this was probably the modem port because it resembles a mini version of the Ethernet jack.

But everyone ignored my comments choosing instead to believe the dream.

I felt like the guy in the room telling everyone the pro wresting they're watching is fake; they don't disagree with me, it's just taboo to talk about it.

So when I said the mystery port was probably a modem jack, all the other posters were like, "Yeah, whatever. So what's that mystery port?" Choosing to ignore the truth.

One thing I'm fairly certain of, the new PowerMacs will not sport USB 2 yet.

It just isn't in Apple's interest what with FireWire and all.

Apple wants FireWire to be THE high-speed standard and USB to be the standard for peripherals that don't need such speed, like keyboards, mice, printers, etc.

    No USB 2.

OK, I am on record as saying the original images at the top of this thread are real, but a only a mule case. The shipping version will be very Xserve-like.

Still, for those that asked about QS:

    Were these fake?

It is like some of you won't ve happy without a batch of professional photos and PDF technical schematic signed by Steve Jobs and digitally encoded.

The fan next to the logic board is just one of four fans in the box. there is one bhind the hard drives, one on the logic board door, and two up by the power supply.

The cables are all unpluged and all the screws have been removed. They where brobaly taking the unit apart to see how it was built. I would do the same thing with a new box and would not be suprized if there are more photos to be seen.

    Later Steve

    Thanks

if those are air vents on the front i would rather have some LED's behind it to throw light about under the desk, any excuse to crack the case open an crash about, besides i already have Firewire and USB hubs on the desk now.

but what i really want is a glowing red lens on the front, just like hal from 2001. you could put it where that useless speaker is on the upper front of the case.

so, any photoshop wizards up to the task of virtualy taking off the plastic rap and trying to get it to look like it might with it off?

it might be interesting to see an example of a really good photo job of what it COULD really look like

btw, my opinion is that this is the standarized apple testing case.

no, they weren't, but they also WERE NOT THE FINAL QS, either. they changed the colour scheme to the silver look, opaqued the doors, and you'll notice the handles on those pix have the "ribs" of the graphite sawtooths and yikes models, whereas the final QS had beautiful no-rib handles.

so, suffice it to say that this is a fairly good indicator of at least 80% of the upcoming redesign. but might not be totally 100% legit.

but FINALLY we get a scoop before an announcement!

bet steve will up the price $1000 just to spite us. or, maybe, steve: "I WAS going to sell this model for $1100, but just because Joe had to be a dumbass, we'll be asking $4500... Oh, and Joe? You're fired."

    oh, and by the way...

why in god's name do they insist on a simple single speaker? why can't they toss in a free set of external orb speakers, and just save the space in the tower for something else? am i the only one who feels like this?

Now if only someone would leak the (accurate) specs.

Why is there so much emphasis on cooling? Is it because we're going to see single 1GHz, dual 1GHz and QUAD 1GHz models?

Apple can now get 1GHz G4s in quantity and cheaply.

    Who's got the specs?

    What ATA?

    What speed RAM?

    What max RAM?

    What speed system bus?

    What speed AGP?

    What speed PCI?

What speed FireWire (Although the FireWire ports look like the 400Mbps kind -- the 800Mbps kind reportedly use a different plug. No new FireWire?)
