I have about 100GB worth of data that needs to be transfered from my Mac to a friend's PC. Will his PC (running XP) be able to recognize the data on my Mac-formatted external hard drive?
If not, how do I handle transferring all the data?
God, I hate PeeCees.

If all else fails, you might have to go with DVDs or set up some sort of an FTP, although slow, it would get the job done. Good luck.
OK, here's my hardware situation. I have a PowerBook Pismo with USB and Firewire. The data is on an external Firewire HD.
My buddy has a desktop PeeCee with USB and Firewire. I want to find some way of getting the files on his PeeCee without needing to burn 120-150 CD-R discs.
So, what to I have to do to connect my PowerBook to his PeeCee? Do I just connect the two via a Firewire cable?
BTW: Thanks for your help thus far.
FireWire gets you nada in this case.
Assuming it's Panther you need to connect via ip-over-firewire, directly via a crossover ethernet cable or otherwise get them on the same LAN.
On the XP machine turn on sharing on a folder and give 'anyone' read and write access (not terribly secure but you should switch it off when done).
In the Panther Finder Connect to... the XP machine and you should be able to drag and drop the files with relative ease.

Panther and XP can do ip over firewire (it might be a seperate download for XP) but you don't mention what OS you're running.

This particular PowerBook is still running OS 9.2.2 and I need to transfer the data by this Friday. I was thinking of taking my PowerBook, external HD, and extra firewire and ethernet cables over to his house tonight and just try a few different things to see what the easiest way is to transfer the data.
Man, it was SO much easier to transfer my data from my PC to the Mac three years ago when I made the switch from PC to Mac. I wish it was as easy to transfer data in the other direction.
My biggest concern is with my friend's PC. He knows less about computers than I do, so if the settings on his XP machine need to be adjusted in order to communicate with my Mac, he won't know what to do ... and I don't know much about XP. The last windows version I used was windows 98.
Man, I hope I don't have the spend the rest of this week burning CDs.
after it's backed up, reformat the external FW drive to be FAT32. (BTW, did you ever check to see what format it's in already? most out of the box FW drives are PC formatted and would be readable on both machines)
if he has firewire and your drive is fat32 formatted, then he can copy data to and from the drive, just like you can.
mac --> FAT32 --> XP
XP -->FAT32 --> mac
if you're not sure how to check how your drive is formatted, let me know.

well, the easiest of all options, if you have the space is to back up all the data from your external FW drive to your laptop.

My internal HD only has 9Gigs of free space. I have around 100GB worth of graphic design, video, and image files that need to be transferred by this Friday. A DVD burner and disks would probably be best, but I don't really want to fork-over $300 for a new drive and disks. I have a CD burner, but that's a lot of CDs and a lot of burn time.
I should probably check the format before I go over to his house in a couple hours. I'm not sure how to check which format it's in, but I can say this: When I first plugged the Firewire drive into my Mac, my Mac recommended that I format the HD ... and I did. So, it's using whatever formatting my Mac put on it, not the pre-installed formatting. So, I suspect it isn't FAT32, but I'd like to know how to check.
Thanks!
